Après une période de forte activité durant le VIe siècle, la production de l’ivoire reprend à la fin du IXe siècle, s’intensifie durant les Xe et XIe siècles et disparaît progressivement à partir du XIIe siècle. Le renouveau de la culture antique à l’époque de la dynastie des Macédoniens (867-1056) peut expliquer en grande partie l’essor de l’ivoire durant cette période. Le coffret de Veroli est un exemple représentatif de la survivance des motifs et thèmes antiques qui ont fait leur apparition dans l’imagerie byzantine après la fin de l’iconoclasme.
Ce coffret, réalisé de plaques d’ivoire et de bordures en os, présente une série des scènes de la mythologie entourées de bandes de rosettes. Sur le couvercle est déployée l’histoire de l’Enlèvement d’Europe : Zeus déguisé en taureau enlève la fille d’Agénor, Europe et la conduit sur l’île de Crète. La scène est entourée des centaures et ménades qui jouent et dansent sous la musique d’Héraklès. Sur le devant du coffret, sont sculptés le sacrifice d'Iphigénie et l’histoire de Bellérophon capturant Pégase. Sur l'arrière est représentée une partie d'un cortège dionysiaque, ainsi que deux personnages identifiés comme étant les dieux Arès et Aphrodite. Les extrémités du coffret sont décorées de l’ours de Dionysos sur un char tiré par des panthères, et d'une nymphe chevauchant un hippocampe.
La thématique du coffret de Veroli a probablement été inspirée par les chants de Nonnos, un poète du Ve siècle originaire de Panopolis.
Le style des personnages est loin de nous rappeler le style antique : des personnages joufflus, potelés, et coiffés de boucles, avec un canon court et des attitudes dansantes. La façon satirique avec laquelle sont interprétées les scènes révèle l’influence d’un vaste héritage décoratif antique.
Ce coffret a été acquis et conservé dans le trésor de la cathédrale de Veroli, une ville du sud-est de Rome, jusqu’en 1861 avant de faire partie par la suite de la collection du Victoria and Albert Museum de Londres. La qualité exceptionnelle de cet objet laisse supposer qu’à l’origine il a dû avoir été exécuté pour un grand aristocrate ou un membre de la cour impériale. Il a probablement servi comme boîte à bijoux ou pour contenir de petites bouteilles à parfum.
Le coffret de Veroli appartient au groupe des « coffrets à rosettes » en raison des bandes sculptées de rosettes qui entourent les scènes principales. La finesse d’exécution, le rendu des postures des personnages et la richesse thématique contribuent à considérer ce coffret comme le meilleur du groupe.
