En thuluth : « La patience est un excellent auxiliaire pour tout le reste »
Le décor est imprimé en bleu sur le fond blanc. Dans la partie supérieure, un bandeau est épigraphié en thuluth. Cette graphie très prisée par les Mamluks présente des caractéristiques stylistiques marquées : les lettres sont légèrement inclinées et leurs hampes sont allongées. Ici, les espaces laissés libres entre les hampes sont ornés de motifs tressés largement utilisés dans les textiles, les métaux, les bois... L’inscription est un dicton qui fait allusion à la patience qui conduit à la victoire et rappelle que tout à une fin. La citation du mot « Nasr » (victoire) est peut-être une allusion au sultan al-Nâsir al-Dîn Muhammad ibn Qalâ’ûn qui gouverna à trois reprises dans le passé (r. 1294-1295, 1299-1309 et 1309-1340).
Dans la partie inférieure se développe sur quatre rangées, en alternance et en quinconce, un décor répétitif fait de trois motifs, étoiles à huit branches et motifs circulaires reliés par des « nœuds du bonheur ». Ils sont ornés en leur centre de divers éléments tels que motifs tressés et rayonnants, bandeaux perlés, palmettes, que l’on retrouve beaucoup sur les métaux à la même époque.
Le décor de cette pièce est imprimé à l’aide d’un moule. Il en existait de deux types, l’un gravé en relief, l’autre gravé en creux où le décor, à l’inverse du moule en relief, apparaissait dans la couleur de fond du textile. Une autre technique d’impression consistait à poser de la cire pour isoler les motifs avant de placer la teinture (dit batik). Lors des fouilles dans la ville de Fustat, de nombreux fragments de textiles de coton teints et imprimés furent découverts : le Musée d'Art islamique du Caire en conserve une grande variété.
La pratique du textile teinté et imprimé est très ancienne en Égypte. L’un des plus anciens textiles découverts au Fayoum est une pièce de lin teinté datée de plusieurs millénaires. D’autres textiles peut-être du Néolithique ont également été mis au jour dans les tombes du village de Merimda Bani Salama à l'ouest du Delta. À l’époque pharaonique, la teinture du textile, souvent imprimé en rouge, est fréquente et les tombes ont livrés un important matériel qui atteste de cette pratique. Dans les premiers siècles de l’Islam, ce procédé semble diminuer, peut-être au profit d’autres techniques décoratives. À l’époque mamlûke, l’Inde, célèbre pour ses textiles en coton imprimés, influença par ses exportations les productions égyptiennes.
