Qasaba de Mahdiyya

La qasaba de Mahdiyya est bâtie sur un éperon rocheux qui domine une vallée et bénéficie des ressources naturelles (grande forêt) de la plaine du Gharb, qui en font un site stratégique. Son architecture militaire, née de contacts et de confrontations, en fait le témoin d’un échange culturel ininterrompu entre les deux rives de la Méditerranée.
L’un des premiers établissements phéniciens, Thymiateria, fondé par Hannon au Ve siècle av. J.C. sur le littoral atlantique, pourrait correspondre à l’emplacement d’al-Mahdiyya. Le site apparaît dans les sources arabes au Xe siècle sous le nom d’al-Ma‘mûra (la Florissante), puis comme lieu de rencontre entre l’almoravide Yûsuf ibn Tâshufîn (r. 1061-1106) et Ibn ‘Abbâd d’Andalousie[1] sous les Almoravides. Dans la seconde moitié du XIIe siècle, la qasaba de Mahdiyya commença à jouer le rôle de base militaire. Les Almohades y installèrent un chantier de construction navale, point de départ des campagnes dirigées vers l’Andalousie. En 1515, le site fut occupé par les Portugais qui y érigèrent des remparts. À la fin du XVIe siècle, il devint un haut lieu de la piraterie européenne (où se côtoyaient Flamands, Hollandais et surtout Anglais), jusqu’au débarquement des Espagnols en 1614, qui occupèrent le site, le baptisant San Miguel de Ultramar. Repris par les musulmans en 1681, il prit le nom de Mahdiyya.
Ceinte d’un gigantesque mur percé de deux portes, la qasaba mêle des édifices espagnols et islamiques. L’aspect défensif du site est à attribuer aux Espagnols et probablement aux Portugais[2], dont les remparts tirent partie des reliefs naturels du terrain. Le souverain alaouite Mawlây ’Ismâ ‘îl (r. 1672-1727) remania le mur d'enceinte en renforçant la façade sud-est de bastions et de fossés profonds, tout en conservant les trois tours des façades nord-ouest et sud-ouest. Il perça dans la muraille une porte monumentale en pierre de taille qui portait le nom de Bâb Jadîd (la Nouvelle porte), afin de la distinguer de celle dite « de Salé », bâtie par les Espagnols. La maison du gouverneur était un véritable palais doté d'une porte en pierre sculptée, finement décorée. Elle présente le schéma traditionnel des maisons musulmanes : une cour pavée de carreaux de céramique, entourée de quatre salles dont l'accès se fait par une porte ouverte par un arc à muqarnas, surmontée de claustras aux arcs polylobés.
Bien que la plupart des vestiges de la qasaba de Mahdiyya ne remonte pas au-delà du XVIIe siècle, elle reflète pourtant un prototype de fortifications défensives espagnoles au Maroc et constitue un modèle vivant de qasaba remployées et transformées après leur reprise.
