The Anglican church of Saint Andrew’s is located in an area of greenery between the rue Sidi Bouabid and the rue d’Angleterre, below the headquarters of the Delegation of Culture and the Tangiers Museum of Contemporary Art (the former consulate of Great Britain). It was built in 1883, on a plot of land donated by Sultan Hassan I, to provide a place of worship for British residents. Part of the plot was reserved for the creation of a cemetery, which is located alongside the church and which contains the tombs of well-known English people, such as The Times correspondent Walter Harris.
The architecture and decoration of the building, inspired by the Arabo-Islamic style, is evidence of the presence of Moroccan workers and craftsmen. The belfry, built on the model of Moroccan mosque minarets, is square-shaped, and its base is decorated with mosaic tiles and geometric shapes sculpted on stucco. The arches of the door and windows are either rounded horseshoe or pointed horseshoe in shape. The canopy over the simply whitewashed main entrance is made from wood, and decorated with brackets. Inside, twin marble columns separate the naves. The choir is reached through a horseshoe arch, topped with a floral decoration, and framed by a strip of text from the Gospel, written in kufic. The ceilings are covered with painted woodwork, and the roofs are covered in green tiles. The niche, located behind the alter, is decorated with plaster lattice-work, and is decorated with the motto of the Nasrids of Granada “There is no conqueror but God”.
