Ce panneau composé de 60 carreaux s’orne, sous une arcature suggérée par deux écoinçons, d’un décor floral dense, axé. D’un vase jaillit une gerbe fleurie bleu, jaune, vert et brun. Oeillets, tulipes et marguerites se mêlent à des rinceaux, à des palmettes, à des feuilles dentelées. Le verre ayant fusé, le dessin, pourtant précis et raffiné, perd un peu de sa netteté par endroits. Les motifs sont traités avec des dégradés de couleurs.
Le décor des panneaux de céramique tunisoise, s’il utilise souvent des motifs standardisés comme le mihrâb et le bouquet de fleurs, offre néanmoins une grande variété de combinaisons d’un panneau à l’autre, et témoigne de la liberté du céramiste.
À partir du XVIe siècle, sous l'influence hispano-mauresque due à l'arrivée de plusieurs artisans andalous, la céramique devint l'élément dominant de la décoration architecturale tunisienne ; par ailleurs, la conquête ottomane permit l'adoption de modes nouvelles qui contribua à l’originalité spécifique de la céramique tunisienne, où se rencontrent aussi des influences italiennes.
La technique utilisée était commune à plusieurs pays du bassin méditerranéen. Après une première cuisson, les carreaux étaient recouverts d'une glaçure stannifère. Après séchage, des pigments minéraux[1] sont appliqués sur la glaçure pour une deuxième cuisson.
Les panneaux à décor de bouquet, provenant des ateliers de Qallaline, furent utilisés dans plusieurs monuments tunisiens, au mausolée de Sidi Sahib à Kairouan ainsi que dans plusieurs demeures tunisoises et de la « Régence ». Ils furent aussi exportés en Algérie, où on peut les admirer devant le Musée du Bardo mais aussi in situ (mausolée de Sidi Abderrahmane à Alger, (XVe siècle, revêtement du XIXe siècle). Ils sont aussi très représentés en Libye, où ils furent utilisés avec bonheur dans le décor de plusieurs monuments tripolitains[2]. Les décors égyptiens font aussi usage de la céramique de Qallaline : sur un panneau des murs de la mosquée Al-Shuribji (Alexandrie, 1758), figure le nom de l'artisan céramiste, al-Haj Massoud al-Sba', auteur également signé de panneaux de céramique du mausolée de Sidi Ali Azzouz et de Dar Stari à Tunis.
