Poème en graphie naskhi : « Au nom d'Allah clément et miséricordieux /cette demeure rayonne de joie/ et égaie ceux qui la regardent/la bonne fortune est inscrite sur ses seuils/franchissez-les en toute quiétude ».
Ce panneau porte un décor d’inspiration à la fois turque et andalouse.
Dans un mihrâb constitué de deux colonnettes soutenant un arc brisé, un texte rédigé en style cursif est réparti en cinq cartouches polylobés et superposés. Il souhaite la bienvenue et la bénédiction à ceux qui franchissent le seuil de la demeure où était installé le panneau. Le texte pieux est surmonté, sous l’arc, par le dessin stylisé d’une mosquée, représentée sur une surface plane où toute perspective est absente. De cet édifice de type ottoman ne sont tracés qu’une coupole centrale flanquée de deux minarets et de petites coupoles. Les bordures sont composées de rameaux fleuris. L’œuvre est signée Khimiri.
Cet objet illustre bien l’influence ottomane dans l’art ifriqiyen, visible notamment à travers l’utilisation du mihrâb pour l’encadrement et de la mosquée à coupole centrale et à minarets circulaires reflétant le prototype ottoman.
Le décor épigraphique tout à fait particulier est caractéristique des ateliers Khimiri. Trois prototypes similaires sont actuellement conservés au musée du Bardo. Un autre, au décor différent, provenant du même atelier, appartient aux collections du musée du quai Branly à Paris[1]. Ces grands panneaux revêtaient sans doute tous les murs des demeures, palais ou édifices tunisois à l'exemple du mausolée de Sidi Mehrez, où un exemplaire fabriqué en 1805 est encore in situ. Ils sont parvenus jusqu’en Algérie, où un exemplaire semblable constitué de cinquante carreaux orne le château d’Hydra à Alger. Cette production s'est diffusée aussi en Libye. On la retrouve sur plusieurs édifices, par exemple à la mosquée Mustapha Gorgi (1834) et dans plusieurs demeures tripolitaines, comme celle de « Beït Mohsen » dont le panneau date de 1813, qui nous offre pour la première fois le nom complet du céramiste, c'est al-Ustah Yussif al-Khimiri. L'engouement pour ces panneaux se répandit même en Égypte où ils sont présents par exemple à la mosquée et au mausolée de Muhammad Abû Adh-Dhahâb édifiés en 1774. Il semble que ce type de céramique ait été exporté vers les pays de la rive sud de la Méditerranée occidentale à l'exception du Maroc, ainsi que dans certains pays européens, à l'exemple de l'Italie et de la France[2].
