The ramparts, flanked by round towers and bastions, surrounding the medina are pierced by many gates. Built in baked brick and partially in tabia, they stand 4 to 8 metres high and are crowned with rounded merlons. They are flanked by twenty round towers and polygonal and rectangular bastions, meant to receive pieces of ordnance. The gates, some of which are rectangular, are surrounded by stone plaques each inscribed in a Moorish arch resting on two columns. Each column is topped with a capital taking an impost and an abacus with a chamfered cornice. The arc is surrounded by a rectangular frame whose upper section is underlined by corbels.
The decorative repertory is limited to epigraphic and plant motifs. The plant-like decoration sculpted in the upper sections of the columns of the gates, characteristic of the eleventh-century decorative repertory, is in the form of interlaced rinceaux from which stand out palmettes inscribed in a band. This type of decoration is attested on ancient capitals, where it takes the form of acanthus leaves, as well as on Hafsid capitals, on which appear smooth leaf motifs. As for the epigraphic decoration, it is located on the shaft of the columns, on which are sculpted in relief flowery Kufic characters whose ascenders end in branches tipped with multifoil palmettes, characteristic of the Fatimo-Zirid decorative repertory. The naskhi script is sculpted on the commemorative panels.
The ramparts of Kairouan are a characteristic example of Ifriqiyan walls built of solid brick, refurbished during the modern and contemporary period to adapt them to military defence techniques, as was the case for the ramparts and qasaba of Sousse, constructed in the ninth century then continually added to and refurbished over the centuries.
The use of tabia, a compressed mixture of lime, sand and gravel, is a construction technique that has been widely used in North African buildings since the Almohad period. Tabia was used in the construction of the walls of Rabat (Morocco, reign of Caliph al-Mansūr, 1184–99) and of the qasaba of Chefchaouen (Morocco, early sixteenth century, Wattassid period, by Sharif Moulay Mohamed Ibn Ali Ibn Rachid).
