Ce visage masculin réalisé en stuc est assez endommagé : le nez, la bouche, ainsi qu’une partie de l’œil droit ont disparu. Le personnage a de grands yeux soulignés par une arcade assez proéminente, il est barbu et coiffé d’un turban.
Cette représentation, ainsi que des dizaines d'autres objets zoomorphes et anthropomorphes, fut trouvée dans un désordre complet dans une poche archéologique lors des fouilles de Sabra al-Mansuriyya, ce qui rend leur datation exacte impossible. Néanmoins, leur appartenance à l'époque fatimo-ziride (milieu Xe - milieu XIe siècle), qui coïncide avec la période d’occupation de Sabra al-Mansuriyya, est certaine. D’autres représentations humaines exécutées en stuc, et également attestées sur la terre cuite, ont été trouvées sur le même site.
Les traits du visage sont exécutés avec une telle simplification que toute expression semble absente. Ces représentations nous rappellent étrangement, par certains traits, comme les yeux globulaires et les représentations de face, des personnages figurant sur des stèles votives africaines d’époque romaine, dont les vestiges sont particulièrement nombreux dans la région kairouanaise. D'ailleurs, le bas relief en marbre de Mahdiyya[1] présente des analogies certaines avec les stucs de Sabra.
Cette collection ifriqiyenne de représentations figurées ne constitue pas un fait rare, comme certains le pensent, dans l'art islamique. Dès l'époque omeyyade, plusieurs statues en stuc sculptées de personnages et d’animaux embellissaient différents palais et édifices[2]. Les fouilles des châteaux omeyyades de Qasr al-Hayr al-Gharbi (Syrie) et de Mshatta (Jordanie) ont exhumé un matériel exceptionnel révélant une certaine survivance de l'art gréco-romain. D'ailleurs, la statue censée représenter le calife omeyyade Hishâm Ibn 'Abd al-Malik (r. 724-743) trouvée à Qasr al-Hayr al-Gharbi présente un personnage au visage barbu et à l'œil globulaire qui n'est pas sans rappeler certaines statues de Sabra.
Plus tard, à l'époque abbasside, essentiellement à partir du Xe-XIe siècle, d'autres statues du même genre ont été exécutées, surtout en Mésopotamie, en Iran[3] et en Égypte. Les traits des personnages présentent des influences asiatiques avec des visages ronds et joufflus et des yeux bridés, à l'instar de dizaines de figurines provenant des fouilles de Qasr Abu Nasr en Irak.
