Cette pièce a été réalisée pour la Grande Mosquée de Kairouan. Elle est datable du deuxième quart du XIe siècle, sans doute à la veille de la rupture entre le prince ziride al- Mu’izz ibn Badis et le calife fâtimide du Caire, au moment même où fut édifiée la maqsûra de la Grande Mosquée de Kairouan et certainement avant les invasions hilaliennes de 1051.
Cette lanterne offre un bel exemple de dinanderie dans le monde islamique au Haut Moyen Âge.
Cette œuvre maîtresse est constituée de divers éléments. Le crochet de suspension comprend une tige et un anneau, relié lui-même à une calotte hémisphérique. De cette dernière se détachent trois chaînes constituées de plaques ajourées reliant par des anneaux la calotte à un bassin, élément principal de cette lanterne dont laest surmontée d’un large col légèrement évasé. panse à paroi bombée
L’ajourage du bassin comporte sur l’épaule un galon constitué d’octogones et de demi octogones ; sur le fond se trouve une étoile à six branches inscrite dans un cercle ainsi que trois bandeaux épigraphiés rédigés en écriture kufique.
Cette lanterne est considérée parmi les plus anciennes pièces en cuivre datées qui nous soient parvenues. Elle semble être l'héritière d'un modèle byzantin qui s'est propagé à l'époque islamique dans toute l'ère arabo-musulmane. Ceci est corroboré par deux spécimens, l'un en provenance d’Iran, appartenant à la David Collection de Copenhague[1], et l’autre d'origine méconnue, conservé à l'Art Institute of Chicago, datables tous les deux des Xe-XIe siècles.
L'allure générale de ces lanternes sera reprise par les couronnes de lumière en verre d’époque ayyubide et mamluke produites en Égypte et en Syrie, actuellement conservées dans plusieurs musées, en Europe et en Orient[2].
