This piece was made for the Great Mosque of Kairouan. It dates from the second quarter of the eleventh century, and was no doubt made shortly after the rupture between the Zirid prince, al-Mu’izz ibn Badis, and the Fatimid caliph of Cairo, when the maqsura of the Great Mosque of Kairouan was constructed, and certainly before the Hilālian invasions of 1051.
This lantern is a fine example of copperware in the Islamic world during the High Middle Ages.
This masterpiece is comprised of various elements. The suspension hook comprises a shaft and a ring, which is attached to a hemispherical dome. Three chains, composed of openwork plates, extend from the dome, linking it with rings to a basin. This is the main element of the lantern, whose curved body is surmounted by a wide and slightly flared rim.
The basin’s openwork comprises a band composed of octagons and semi-octagons on the shoulder; on the bottom of the basin there’s a six-pointed star inscribed in a circle, and three epigraphic bands in kufic script.
This lantern is considered to be one of the oldest surviving dated pieces in copper. It seems to have been inspired by a Byzantine model, which was in vogue throughout the Arab-Muslim world during the Islamic period. This is attested by two examples dating from between the tenth and eleventh centuries: a lantern of Persian origin belonging to the David Collection in Copenhagen [1], and another of unknown origin, which is held in the Art Institute of Chicago.
The general appearance of these lanterns served as a model for the glass crowns of light, which were produced in Egypt and Syria during the Ayyubid and Mamluk periods, and are currently held in various museums in Europe and the East [2].
