Ce médaillon en tapisserie décorait un vêtement, une nappe, une couverture ou un coussin. Il a été réalisé par les Coptes, les chrétiens d’Egypte, soit à l’époque où l’Egypte était byzantine, soit à l’époque musulmane, après les conquêtes arabes de 641.
Le décor a été exécuté à « la navette volante », c’est à dire qu’une navette, armée d’un fil blanc, a formé le dessin en procédant par bonds entre différents points de la pièce.
La composition décorative, dominée par un carré central entouré de quatre losanges, offre l’aspect d’un cloisonnement géométrique qui ressemble fort aux mosaïques de pavement des premiers siècles de l’ère chrétienne. Ces mosaïques, encore nombreuses autour de la Méditerranée, sont particulièrement éloquentes à Antioche (l’actuelle Antakya), dans la Maison des Portiques ou dans la Maison de Dionysos et d’Ariane. On les trouve à Bethléem, dans l’église de la Nativité, et dans bien d’autres sites.
Ces ornements complexes, agencés dans un disque que l’on plaçait en haut de la tunique, au niveau de l’épaule, ont pris chez les Byzantins une signification symbolique. L’exemplaire de l’IMA adopte une division quadripartite dont les principaux éléments sont reliés entre eux par des petits chemins : il s’agit d’un labyrinthe configurant l’Univers et qu’on appelle très justement un orbiculus : « un petit monde ». La couleur brun-violacé - probablement obtenue par superposition de bleu d’indigo et de rouge de garance - imite la pourpre phénicienne, mystérieuse teinture réservée aux empereurs, et dont les artisans levantins gardaient le secret. Dans les mosaïques de Saint-Vital à Ravenne, représentant Justinien, Théodora et leur cour (VIe siècle), ces labyrinthes, inscrits dans des disques ou des carrés, figurent sur les vêtements des grands dignitaires. Dans la mosaïque consacrée au sacrifice d’Abel et de Melchisédech, ils décorent la nappe de l’autel.
Quelle que soit la portée du décor, cette technique de tissage inventée par les Coptes, et qui consiste à insérer dans une toile de lin une tapisserie en laine teinte, aura une longue existence. Elle perdurera en Egypte musulmane jusqu’au XIIe siècle, sous le nom de kubati : « à la copte ». Ce sont probablement des tisserands égyptiens qui l’apporteront en Andalousie, à l’époque du califat de Cordoue.
