Le monastère royal de Notre Dame de Guadalupe a été déclaré « Monument national » en 1878. En 1993, l’Unesco a promu l’ensemble au rang de « Patrimoine de l’Humanité ».
Cet impressionnant monastère, œuvre phare de l’architecture d’Estremadure, fut un lieu traditionnel de pèlerinage. Il a abrité au cours du Moyen Age et à l’époque moderne d’importantes et fructueuses rencontres diplomatiques. Il servit en outre de panthéon royal et de lieu de villégiature pour les membres de la famille royale. Cet ensemble est le fruit de plusieurs phases constructives visibles à travers les différents styles qui le composent : gothique, mudéjar, renaissance, baroque et néoclassique.
L’histoire de ce sanctuaire a commencé à la fin du XIIIe siècle et au début du XIVe siècle ; un berger de la zone de Cacéres, appelé Gil Cordero, trouva une Vierge sculptée qui avait été cachée lors de l’invasion arabe. Le bruit courut bientôt qu’elle faisait des miracles, ce qui parvint même aux oreilles du roi Alphonse XI qui adorait la chasse et se rendait fréquemment dans la contrée de Las Villuercas où avait eu lieu la découverte. Après avoir entendu les récits de miracles, le roi s’en remit à cette Vierge et sortit victorieux de la bataille du río Salado en 1340. Très reconnaissant des faveurs dont il avait fait l’objet, il concéda des privilèges et des rentes qui permirent la construction puis l’agrandissement du sanctuaire entre 1337 et 1347.
Le sanctuaire comprend une église gothique (XIVe-XVe siècles), des chapelles, une sacristie, un cloître gothico-mudéjar, le pavillon de la bibliothèque (XVe siècle), l’église de la Sainte Trinité et d’autres dépendances. Le cloître mudéjar se distingue particulièrement par ses dimensions spectaculaires. De plan carré, il comporte deux étages ornés d’arcs en ogives.
Au centre du sanctuaire se trouve le célèbre pavillon mudéjar construit en 1405 par Frère Jean de Séville ; il réunit de façon surprenante les éléments islamique et gothique. Doté de deux étages de formes irrégulières, il abrite des arcs inégaux caractéristiques de l’art almohade auxquels sont associés des briques courbes, du stuc et des carreaux de céramique glacée.
Plusieurs années durant, le monastère resta entre les mains de l’ordre de Saint Jérôme et de celui des Franciscains ; de nos jours, cet ensemble magnifiquement restauré, propose, en plus de services religieux, des activités culturelles, et même des possibilités d’y résider.
