Cette jarre, par sa forme et sa technique inspirée de productions andalouses, témoigne du brassage continu des cultures ifriqiyennes et espagnoles. Dépourvue de col, elle s’achève par une lèvre en bourrelet. Sa panse ovoïde qui conserve encore les traces de deux anses arrachées repose sur un fond légèrement convexe de faible diamètre.
Le décor se développe sur le tiers supérieur de la jarre, incisé sur cordons d’argile horizontaux et estampé sous glaçure monochrome. Il s’organise en quatre bandeaux consécutifs où se déroulent des motifs végétaux, palmettes bifides et rinceaux, délimités par des bandes d’incision aux motifs de chevrons, de losanges et d’ondulations. Dans le bandeau supérieur, les décors végétaux précédents sont ponctués de motifs épigraphiques cursifs prophylactiques, eulogies reproduisant le mot al-yumn (la félicité).
Cette pièce offre un bel exemple d’un groupe de jarres produites au Maroc, qui s’apparente aux tinajas, jarres à vin espagnoles au profil similaire et dont les décors sont réalisés en relief ou en creux, puis couverts d’une glaçure verte ou ambrée plombifère légèrement opacifiée. De ces jarres dérive certainement la série des vases dits de l’Alhambra[1], qui furent réalisés en Andalousie dans les ateliers de Malaga aux XIIIe et XIVe siècles. On rencontre également une production similaire en Jézireh et en Égypte.
Leur décor est aussi à mettre en lien avec des margelles de puit marocaines ou espagnoles, comme celle conservée au musée Ethnographique de Tétouan, datée de 1190, dont le décor est estampé sous une glaçure verte[2].
Ce type de jarre était destiné à la conservation de liquides (huile, vin) ou de denrées (grain). La glaçure permettait l’étanchéité du récipient. Objet utilitaire essentiel à la vie de la maison ou du palais, on en rencontre déjà dans l’Antiquité en Mésopotamie ou en Grèce. Fréquentes en Méditerranée, ces jarres pouvaient être enterrées au trois quart dans le sol, ou bien placées côte à côte dans un lieu de stockage, comme on en connaît des exemples au Portugal.
