Cette coupe de forme hémisphérique munie d’un pseudo-marli repose sur un pied annulaire. Ses deux faces sont couvertes d’une glaçure opacifiée blanche.
La composition est réalisée avec trois couleurs : le brun délimitant les motifs, le vert et le jaune ocre comme couleur de remplissage. Cette coupe offre une certaine richesse et un effet rythmique observé aussi bien dans l’usage des couleurs que dans la disposition des motifs.
La lèvre est ornée de motifs de demi-lunes colorés en vert et jaune miel. A partir du motif central, constitué d’une étoile à six branches, se développe un décor rayonnant composé de quatre palmes groupées par deux séparées par des feuilles lancéolées disposées diamétralement. Entre chacun de ces six motifs sont intercalées six fleurs de lotus.
Les motifs végétaux et floraux rappellent dans une large mesure les décors de certains plafonds de la Grande Mosquée de Kairouan, où des étoiles et des rameaux, parfois soulignés par des bagues à bourrelets.
D'autres pièces de céramique de Raqqada offrent la même ornementation exubérante et variée, avec un marli où alternent lignes courbes et demi-cercles. Au IXe siècle déjà, en Mésopotamie, et au siècle suivant en Egypte fatimide, les motifs de demi-lune sont attestés sur les marlis des pièces en céramique lustrée. La fleur de lotus sera présente sur d’autres coupes fatimides[1]. Toutefois, si la combinaison de ces motifs semble marquée par une certaine naïveté due au poids du substrat berbère, l'effet rythmique des couleurs et des formes n'est pas étranger à l'esthétique islamique. On le retrouve par exemple dans des décors de plat en céramique des IXe-Xe siècles provenant des fouilles d'Afrâsiyâb à Samarcande ou encore d'Irak[2]. Cet esprit se retrouve aussi dans les pièces de céramique islamique exhumées à Mertola au Portugal[3].
Remarquons que cette coupe se caractérise par un fond blanc à décor vert et brun, à l’opposé de la majorité des coupes contemporaines exhumées à Raqqada, qui sont elles à fond jaune et à décor vert.
