Cette gargoulette, munie d’une petite anse latérale surmontée d’un poucier conique, présente un pied annulaire étroit, une panse globulaire carénée et un col tronconique aux parois évasées. Un filtre obture le récipient au niveau du raccordement avec le col. Comme sur la plupart des gargoulettes, ce filtre présente un décor ajouré et incisé formant une sorte de dentelle géométrico-florale. Des compartiments ornés de motifs oblongs végétaux rayonnent autour d’un carré central, motif très présent dans le décor des céramiques vert et brun du Maghreb et d’Espagne aux Xe - XIIe siècles, ainsi qu’en Iran et en Égypte. Ce type de vase sans glaçure étaient destiné à contenir de l’eau : la céramique, poreuse, permet une légère évaporation qui contribue au maintien d’une certaine fraîcheur. La fonction du filtre était de protéger l’eau de la pollution et des insectes.
Ce type de récipient est bien connu dans l’art fatimide : un grand nombre de filtres ont été trouvés à Fustat datés des XIe et XIIe siècles. Ces gargoulettes à filtre sont un témoignage du goût du décor et de la recherche esthétique dans le monde islamique, même pour des objets utilitaires. Les filtres présentent des thèmes multiples d’une exécution fine et précise avec des sujets animaliers, végétaux et épigraphiques. Ce type de production se développe au Maghreb à partir du milieu du Xe siècle, certainement sous influence orientale. On en retrouve quelques exemplaires sur le site de M’sila, fondation fatimide, sur le site de Sétif et sur celui de la Qal‘a où les motifs sont plutôt géométriques et végétaux. En Sicile, la production semble moins importante. On en connaît cependant quelques exemplaires à Armerina, parfois munis de bec verseur, et à Palerme, du XIe et XIIIe siècle, aux anses surmontées de pouciers coniques.
Le filtre peut se trouver également au niveau du bec, tout comme sur le bol protohistorique de Maghraoua (Tunisie) et celui de Gastel (Algérie) à bec verseur, tradition qui survit encore dans la poterie berbère actuelle.
