This console was used as a joist for one of the beams of the wooden roofing of the prayer hall of the Great Mosque of Kairouan. It is part of a group of wooden architectural elements from the upper section of this mosque. Some of the boards, beams and friezes remain on the site, while another part, removed during restoration work carried out on the Great Mosque during the 1960’s, is currently held in the reserves of the l'Institut National du Patrimoine in Kairouan.
After study of the decorative and epigraphic repertory of all these wooden elements, the oldest among them have been dated to the first half of the ninth century, while others may probably be dated to the early eleventh century.
The decoration of the front of this console, whose extremity is shaped like a half palm-leaf, comprises a leafy stem forming a loop, and a long leaf with several painted lobes. The lower part of the leaf is sculpted. Study of the plant motifs on other decorations from the same mosque, for example those of the mihrab, has shown that this console may be dated to the tenth century, a time that corresponds to the renovation undertaken during the reign of Ibrahim II (r. 875–902).
This type of element already existed in the architecture of antiquity. Here, it is a distant derivation of the antique model that still had great resonance in Ifriqiya. This type of element is known to have been recycled: sculpted marble consoles of the Byzantine era were used on the porches of the Sousse ribat.
There are similar models in stone in Ifriqiyan architecture of the Middle Ages from the ninth century onwards, such as the consoles that crown the sculpted façade of the Ibn Khayrun Mosque (Kairouan, 866) and those at the springers of the lateral arches beneath the dome of the Great Mosque of Sousse (850–851). The Muslim East has also bequeathed us a number of similar consoles[1].
The use of wooden consoles spread throughout the Muslim West, perhaps due to the influence of the school of Kairouan. They appear mainly in Andalusian mosques and palaces (Great Mosque of Cordoba and Alhambra Palace in Granada) and in the Moroccan madrasa of Marrakech (madrasa of Abu al-Hassen, 1348) and of Fès (madrasa Bou Inaniya, 1350-1355, al-Attarine, fourteenth century, madrasa As-Sahrij, fourteenth century).
