Mausoleum of Sidi Mehrez

The monument is right in the middle of the Bab Souika quarter surrounded by suks of many kinds. Sidi Mehrez is considered the protector of the Tunis medina; Hafsid sultans are very devoted to him. This veneration was perpetuated across the ages and several members of his family are buried in this mausoleum.
The monument is approached through an opening comprised of a surbased semicircular arch resting on two abutments. The entrance leads to a groin vaulted vestibule, where doors framed with sandstone plates open into five guest bedrooms.
From this entrance the visitor proceeds into a space with walls covered in richly decorated stucco and a large cupola for a ceiling. This is where the door to the funeral chamber is. The funeral chamber is larger than the other rooms and has an ovoid cupola. The walls are covered with carved wood surmounted by stucco facing richly decorated with geometric and vegetal motifs. The facing is divided into panels in the form of mihrābs. The monument also contains an ablutions hall preceded by a courtyard used for offerings.
With its two cupolas and its facing of ceramic panels inside the prayer hall, the mausoleum of Sidi Mehrez is an example of the influence of Ottoman architecture in Tunis, an influence that is also visible in the Mosque of Mohamed Bey.
