Ce fragment d’objet en verre, irrégulièrement brisé, appartenait peut-être à un plat ou à un bol, comme la trace d’un pied circulaire à l’arrière du fragment peut le laisser penser.
Le fragment est peint des deux côtés. Sur la face sont représentés deux porteurs, imberbes, marchant avec un long bâton sur l'épaule, vêtus d’une tunique courte et de jambières. Entre les deux personnages est suspendue leur proie, gazelle ou antilope, dont les quatre pattes sont attachées au bâton. Deux chiens agités font partie de cette scène ; le premier est représenté sous la proie, le second à côté du personnage de droite. À gauche des porteurs, un homme, partiellement conservé, leur fait signe. On aperçoit partiellement trois autres personnages, ainsi que la queue et la hanche d’un animal, probablement un léopard, en dessous. Au-dessus sont visibles les sabots, les longs pieds et l’encolure courbe d’un animal, sans doute un chameau. Les animaux représentés, qui, à part les chiens, sont difficiles à identifier, indiquent néanmoins un paysage d'Afrique ou d'Asie. Il semble que les personnes et les animaux se combinent librement en une scène de chasse.
À l’arrière, le fragment était décoré par une bande concentrique de 1,5 cm de largeur avec une ornementation végétale stylisée. Des palmettes et des feuilles schématisées ont été peintes entre des lignes en zigzag.
La couleur de fond de l’objet est bleu foncé, couleur due au cobalt. Dans cet exemple, le cobalt est associé à un pourcentage relativement grand de fer et de zinc. Cette composition est connue pour des verres du IXe siècle dans des contextes islamiques. La couleur des scènes, peintes avec de l’argent, varie du vert au jaune foncé. Les premiers verres colorés fabriqués avec cette technique proviennent d’Égypte et datent du VIIIe siècle. Cette constatation exclut qu’il s’agisse d’un verre romain.
On retrouve ce décor végétal dans l’art byzantin du Xe au XIIe siècle. Il peut être comparé à celui d’un vase en verre du trésor de Saint-Marc à Venise[1], daté du Xe siècle. Les deux objets sont décorés de scènes figuratives inspirées de l’art profane. Le fragment en verre possède une scène de chasse rappelant le décor des mosaïques et d’autres objets de l’Antiquité ; le vase présente des scènes de la mythologie classique.
Selon toute vraisemblance, le fragment en verre de New York a été fabriqué à Constantinople au Xe siècle. Sa technique, connue depuis le VIIIe siècle en Égypte, témoigne de contacts étroits entre le monde byzantin et islamique.
