Le tapis Guergour est ainsi nommé en raison de son lieu de production, à proximité de la ville de Hammam Guergour, au nord de Sétif. De format rectangulaire, ce tapis à fond rouge est encadré de plusieurs bordures ; celle qui entoure le champ central, plus large, comporte un motif dentelé. Au centre, un compartiment rectangulaire prolongé de carrés de part et d’autre enserre un motif hexagonal au cœur fait d’un médaillon floral et géométrique. Les écoinçons s’ornent de triangles. Les compartiments carrés permettaient de varier les dimensions sans altérer le décor de composition.
Dans les tapis Guergour, le rouge garance domine souvent la couleur du fond. Ces tapis sont inspirés par des modèles turcs et plus précisément par les productions de Ghiordès en Anatolie. L’histoire raconte qu’un soldat turc, tisserand de son métier et cantonné à Sétif, apporta à Zemmoura (village de la région de Guergour) un petit tapis de son pays. Le soldat turc enseigna aux reggam[1] l’art du tapis noué. Ce tapis turc avait sans doute des dimensions différentes de celui de Guergour, qui adapte le décor à son propre format. Ces proportions demandent une plus grande attention à l’égard de l’axe médian qui régit le décor. Les compartiments secondaires peuvent être allongés par souci d’harmonie.
L’encadrement du tapis de Guergour rappelle l’ascendance anatolienne du décor. La plus large bordure reproduit presque fidèlement l’une des plus caractéristiques du Ghiordès, d’inspiration populaire, nommée en Anatolie « broderie de Janina ». Il s’agit d’une succession de longues feuilles dentelées et chevronnées. La gamme de couleur est assez restreinte et les laines épaisses. Tandis que le Ghiordès jongle avec les demi teintes et présente des mihrâb à fond vert amande ou rouge, le Guergour adopte des couleurs franches et heurtées ; il remplace les arabesques par des éléments linéaires qui géométrisent la composition. Ce style rapproche ainsi les Guergour des tapis du constantinois (Ot’if).
Ces tapis influencés par les productions de la Turquie anatolienne ont pu être réalisés par des tisserands montagnards appelés à travailler pour le compte des notables du Guergour. On les retrouve dans les tribus environnantes, en particulier au Maadid et aux environs de Sétif. Ces artisans auraient transmis leur savoir faire aux tisserands locaux, qui adoptèrent les décors aux dimensions des tapis algériens traditionnels.
