La coupe caractéristique indique clairement que ce fragment est constitué par la partie basse d’une pièce de costume liturgique, sans doute une dalmatique. Actuellement conservé dans l’église de Valère, parmi un ensemble impressionnant de tissus médiévaux ayant servi de suaires de reliques, il provient de la cathédrale de Sion où il fut découvert en 1923.
Le décor à grande échelle de médaillons de dimensions importantes ne semblait pas destiner cette soierie prestigieuse à être coupée pour la réalisation d’un vêtement. Toutefois nous connaissons, notamment par la miniature, des exemples d’habits fabriqués dans des tissus à grands médaillons, comme le montre la représentation[1] d’un courtisan de l’empereur Nicéphore III Botaniate, vers 1071-1081.
De grands médaillons tangents à la couronne composée de fleurons alignés, contiennent des griffons contournés. Comme dans l’art de la Perse sassanide, les articulations du corps de ces animaux fantastiques sont marquées de rosaces ou autres ornements. D’autres motifs circulaires décorent l’espace intermédiaire au-dessus de la croupe des griffons ainsi que la partie supérieure du médaillon.
L’emploi de la pourpre laisse supposer qu’il s’agit d’un cadeau diplomatique, bien qu’il soit également possible que cette pièce fasse partie d’un butin de la IVe Croisade. La production des soieries de luxe, à l’attention de la cour et des échanges diplomatiques, était assurée soit par les ateliers officiels, soit dans des ateliers privés sévèrement contrôlés, tels que ceux qui sont mentionnés dans le Livre du Préfet[2].
La polychromie de cette soierie est dominée par le violet vif de la pourpre mis en valeur sur le fond noir par le contraste avec le jaune. La trame blanche n’a été employée que pour accentuer la forme ornementale des yeux des griffons.
Peu de tissus teints à la pourpre, colorant connu depuis l’Antiquité classique, nous sont parvenus. On en connaît plusieurs exemples à Palmyre tandis que d’autres ont été trouvés, dans un état fragmentaire, en Europe[3]. Le tissu de Sion en est le témoin le plus prestigieux.
