L’utilisation de jarres remonte à une lointaine antiquité. Elles servaient au transport de l’eau, à la conservation de la nourriture ou au stockage des aliments. Souvent non décorées et non glacées, il en existe cependant de nombreux exemples témoignant d’un souci décoratif, réalisés selon divers procédés.
Les récipients abbassides se distinguaient, que ce soit au IXe ou au Xe siècle, par des formes réalisées au tour. Les potiers jordaniens ajoutaient très souvent à la pâte des pierres pilées pour rendre les pièces plus solides. Cette pâte était de couleurs variées : orange, gris, brun, souvent recouverte d’engobes aux teintes variées.
De nombreuses pièces proviennent de sites archéologiques jordaniens comme Tabaqat Fahl, Jarash, Jabal al-Qal’a à Amman. Certaines portaient des inscriptions en caractères kufiques.
Le nombre important de sites archéologiques en Jordanie prouve l’ampleur du peuplement à la période abbasside. Les types de céramique provenant des fours de Jarash et Tabaqat Fahl se retrouvent aussi en Syrie, comme en témoigne une importante collection exposée au Musée de Damas.
Le récipient A, dépourvu d’anse, peint en brun sur fond crème, possède une large embouchure et était peut-être muni d’un couvercle. Peut-être servait-il à la conservation des aliments à consommation rapide. Le décor est constitué d’un réseau losangé dessiné par de fines tiges végétales. Chaque maille enferme un cercle meublé d’un losange. Ce type de décor de réseaux losangés est très courant dans toutes sortes de supports, et se perpétue au cours des siècles jusqu’en Inde.
Le récipient B, qui présente un petit bourrelet aux deux-tiers de sa hauteur, présente lui-aussi un décor à base de réseaux losangés réunis entre eux par des boucles, peint en rouge sur fond rose. Découverts dans les deux mêmes sites que les petits bols J5203 et Ir 5815, on peut imaginer qu’ils proviennent des mêmes ateliers.
