The use of jars for the transport of water and the storage and conservation of food dates from very ancient times. Although they were often unglazed and undecorated, there nonetheless exist many examples pointing to a concern with ornamentation and made using different processes.
The Abassid containers of the 9th and 10th centuries were distinctive in that they were thrown on the wheel, with Jordanian potters frequently adding ground stone to the clay to make their pots more solid. The clay itself was of different colours – orange, grey or brown – and often coated with slip, likewise of different colours.
Many surviving examples come from Jordanian archaeological sites like Tabaqat Fahl, Jarash, and Jabal al Qal’a in Amman. Some of them bear inscriptions in Kufic.
The sheer number of such sites in Jordan indicates the size of the population during the Abassid period. The kinds of ceramics coming from the kilns of Jarash and Tabaqat Fahl are also to be found in Syria, and there is a substantial collection of them in the museum in Damascus.
Jar A, which has no handles, is decorated with brown paint on a cream-coloured ground and has a large mouth; it may also have had a lid, and was perhaps intended for short-term food storage. The ornamentation is a network of diamond shapes outlined with fine plant stems; each element of the network encloses a circle with a diamond shape inside it. Frequent in all sorts of media, this type of diamond network was practised for centuries and reached as far as India.
Jar B, which has a small bulge two-thirds of the way up, also has ornamentation based on networks of diamonds, here interconnected by loops and painted in red on a pink ground.
Both jars were found on the same sites as the small bowls J5203 and Ir5815, and it seems likely that they were made in the same workshops.
