Necrópolis de al-Qulla

Ésta necrópolis de la familia real marinida, también conocida bajo el nombre de kbibate Beni Merine, se sitúa sobre una colina que domina en el norte Fez al-Bali y sus murallas históricas. Ofrece una vista admirable sobre el valle del Sebou. Los Mariníes (1196-1549) eligieron la colina de al-Qulla para implantar una necrópolis real que sigue llevando su nombre. De 1361 a 1398, los que sucedieron al sultán Abû al-Hasan así como otros príncipes, fueron enterrados en este lugar. Fue la última y principal necrópolis de los Mariníes. La primera fue la de Chellah en Rabat.
Desde los siglos XI y XII, las fuentes escritas relatan la inhumación de numerosos personajes piadosos en este sitio. También aluden a la elevación de una fortaleza con cuatro mausoleos, una mezquita y un hamam, encargados por el sultán almohade Muhammad al-Nâsir (r. 1199-1213). Estos edificios eran alimentados en agua encaminada por canalizaciones desde el ued Fez. Todos estos edificios se desplomaron después de los largos periodos de hambrunas que hubo en Marruecos a finales de la dinastía almohade.
Hoy en día, no existe ningún documento exacto que permite restituir el plano de ésta necrópolis en la época marinida, ni hacernos una idea de su arquitectura y de su decoración. No obstante, permanecen vestigios de tres mausoleos y los de una mezquita con mihrâb. Estas tumbas, hoy deterioradas, aún llevaban en los principios del siglo XVI, según J. Leon el Africano, bellas decoraciones y piedras de mármol con epitafios y letras gravadas enriquecidas con colores vivos. Este geógrafo revela también la existencia, en aquella época, de un “palacio (…) donde se hallaba las tumbas de algunos reyes marinidas (…) que llenaban de admiración los que las contemplaban”.
Hoy en día, no podemos adelantarnos sobre el origen y las fuentes de inspiración de estos edificios funerarios, de los que no queda nada más que ruinas insignificantes. Sin embargo, las descripciones antiguas dejan imaginar una necrópolis del estilo de los mausoleos reales conocidos en Marruecos, y en particular el mausoleo casi contemporáneo de Chellah y el de la época sadí en Marrakech.
