Nécropole d'al-Qulla

Cette nécropole de la famille royale marinide, connue également sous le nom de kbibate Beni Merine, se situe sur une colline qui domine du côté nord Fès al-Bali et ses remparts historiques et offre une vue admirable sur la vallée du Sebou. Sous les Marinides (1196-1549), la colline d’al-Qulla fut choisie pour l’implantation d’une nécropole royale qui porte toujours leur nom. De 1361 à 1398, les successeurs du sultan Abû al-Hasan ainsi que d’autres princes y ont été inhumés. Elle fut la dernière et principale nécropole des Marinides, la première ayant été la nécropole de Chella à Rabat.
Déjà aux XIe et XIIe siècles, les sources écrites révèlent l’inhumation de nombreux personnages pieux sur ce site. Elles font ainsi allusion à l’élévation, par le sultan almohade Muhammad al-Nâsir (r. 1199-1213), d’une forteresse qui renfermait quatre mausolées, une mosquée et un hammam. L’alimentation en eau de ces édifices fut assurée par des canalisations conduites depuis l’oued Fès. Tous ces bâtiments tombèrent en ruine suite aux longues périodes de disettes qui sévirent au Maroc vers la fin de la dynastie almohade.
Nous ne disposons aujourd’hui d’aucun document précis nous permettant la restitution du plan de cette nécropole à l’époque marinide, ni de nous faire une idée de son architecture et de son décor. Néanmoins, il y a lieu d’y relever encore l’existence des vestiges de trois mausolées et ceux d’une mosquée avec mihrâb. Ces tombeaux aujourd’hui délabrés étaient encore au début du XVIe siècle, selon J. Léon l’Africain, décorés de forts beaux ornements et pierres de marbre, avec des épitaphes et des lettres gravées enrichies de vives couleurs. Ce géographe y révèle aussi l’existence, à cette époque, d’un « palais (…) où se trouvent les tombeaux de certains rois marinides (…) qui remplissent d’admiration ceux qui les contemplent ».
Nous ne pouvons, dans l’état actuel des choses, nous avancer sur l’origine et les sources d’inspiration de ces édifices funéraires dont il ne subsiste que quelques vestiges insignifiants. Toutefois, les descriptions anciennes nous laissent imaginer une nécropole dans le style des mausolées royaux connus au Maroc notamment celui presque contemporain de Chella et celui d’époque saadienne à Marrakech.
