Ce moule est composé de deux parties symétriques. Il y a trois charnières : une au bas de chaque patte, et une sur le sommet du dos. Chaque charnière consiste en anneaux reliés par une attache, encore présente sur les charnières des pattes. L’attache au sommet du dos a disparu. Différentes parties du corps de l’éléphant, telles que les oreilles, les yeux, les pieds et le tronc, présentent des gravures plus marquées. Il est clair que ces détails devaient apparaître sur le produit final.
On a supposé que ce moule servait à cuire du pain et des gâteaux, ou à fabriquer des jouets pour enfants. La première interprétation est difficile à accepter. Aujourd’hui, les moules à pâtisserie sont en bois, et non en métal, probablement à cause des effets négatifs de ce dernier sur la farine. En outre, cela n’explique pas la présence d’une ouverture sur le moule, qui ne semble pas convenir pour le remplissage de la farine.
Ce moule servait plus probablement à fabriquer des jouets, bien que le résultat, quel que fût le matériau employé, fût sans doute assez lourd et grossier, et par conséquent peu approprié pour des enfants. On s’attendrait à ce que les jouets fussent de plus petite taille, comme en témoignent les figurines en argile trouvées dans la tombe d’un enfant datée de la période hellénistique.
L’éléphant est un motif répandu dans l’art levantin. À Petra, sous les Nabatéens, il décorait les chapiteaux du Grand Temple. Une mosaïque de l’église Saint-George à Madaba représente un chasseur à dos d’éléphant. On a découvert des exemples plus anciens, tels qu’un petit éléphant en pierre de l’époque sassanide. Dans l'îwânde Taq-i Kisraw, à Kirmanshâh (Iran), on peut voir un éléphant en train de chasser gravé sur l’un des murs (VIe siècle).
L’éléphant témoigne des relations commerciales entretenues par les empires antiques, qui s’étendaient jusqu’à l’Inde, la Chine, et l’Afrique.
La même technique fut utilisée pour fabriquer un petit bélier de même usage.
