L’objet a été découvert dans les années 1920, à l’occasion de travaux réalisés dans la Calle Historiador Palau de Denia. Il s’agit peut-être d’un cadeau du calife fatimide. Il se trouvait à l’intérieur d’une jarre de stockage en céramique, conjointement à d’autres objets en bronze. Il est entré dans les collections du Museo Arqueológico de Denia dans les années 1950. L’état de conservation de la pièce est relativement bon.
Cette pièce faisait partie d’un groupe de onze supports de lampes. Il s’agit du plus grand ensemble de ce type jamais découvert. Peut-être appartenait-il à un groupe d’objets mis à l’abri lors de la conquête de la ville par les chrétiens en 1244. Ce support de lampe prend appui sur une base semi-sphérique munie de trois pieds. Au centre, se dresse un fût ceint à sa base d’une large bague, puis constitué, entre deux boules rondes, d’une partie cylindrique. Un petit plateau destiné à la lampe à huile couronne l’ensemble. Ce support de lampe est typique des pièces fabriquées en Égypte mais aussi en Iran, avec toutefois des variantes.
Le décor est relativement réduit, il se limite essentiellement aux formes dont se compose le fût, ce qui le dote d’un certain dynamisme.
Ces supports de lampe ont un usage domestique. On pouvait les trouver dans les maisons des riches familles.
Cette pièce est clairement apparentée aux dix autres trouvées dans la même jarre. On peut la mettre en relation avec d’autres supports découverts en al-Andalus et hors d’al-Andalus dont les caractéristiques sont similaires. Il s’agit des pièces suivantes :
-un support de lampe conservé au Museo arqueológico de Tolède[1]
-deux supports de lampe conservés au Caire[2]
-un support de lampe d’Égypte ou d’Iran conservé au musée du Louvre[3]
-un support de lampe de la collection al-Sabah du Musée du Koweit[4].
