Très belle inscription en écriture thulth gravée sur une plaque en marbre scellée au milieu de l’un des parapets protégeant la route et la chaussée :
بسـم اللـه الرحمـن الرحيــم
لله قنطـرة الأمير مـــراد ابن الأمير محمد ابن مـــراد
في الحسن والإتقان ما نظر امرؤ شبها لها لو طاف كلّ بـــلاد
فتقبّل اللهمّ السعي منـه فـي إنشائها لمرور هذا الـــوادي
وآجعل ثراه إذا أتاك ميمّمـا عفوا ومغفرة ليوم معـــاد
وقد انتهى منها البناء وتّم في رجب الأصب وساعة الإسعـاد
وبعيد ألف مع مائتيـن أرخت تتلوه ثمانيـة بـلا تــرداد
من هجرة الهادي إلى نهج الهدى وشفيع ملهف وعديم الــزاد
صلى عليه الله جلّ جلالــه يتلوه تسليم بغيـر نفـــاد
- Traduction-inscriptions :
« Au nom de dieu, le Clément, le Miséricordieux. À Dieu est dédié le pont du prince Mourad fils du prince Muhammad fils de Mourad. À cause de sa belle et parfaite silhouette, nul ne peut en voir de semblable même s'il parcourt le monde. Que Dieu le récompense pour cette œuvre pieuse et lui rende son bienfait le jour de la résurrection, grâce à son pardon et à son indulgence. Pont achevé au mois de regeb 1er en l'an 1088 (6 mars 1677) de l'Hégire. Le Prophète le guide vers le droit chemin. Celui qui sera l'intercesseur impatient et généreux. Que Dieu tout puissant répande sur Lui Sa bénédictin et sa félicite éternelle. »
Ce beau monument constitue encore de nos jours une artère vitale de la ville de Mejez al-Bab, reconstruite au XVIIe siècle par les Maures. Il enjambe la Medjerda et assure le passage de la ville de Mejez-el-Bab vers les jardins et les cités andalouses environnantes (Testour, Slouguia, Grich).
Une première restauration eut lieu en 1709, comme l’indique la plaque apposée sur le pont ; en 1943 deux arches détruites lors de la campagne de Tunisie furent reconstruites.
Construit en pierre, l’édifice en dos d’âne comporte huit arches reposant sur des radiers de section carrée au niveau de la terre et conique au niveau de la rivière (pour diminuer le frottement de l’eau sur les parois). Ces arches sont munies de vannes permettant leur obturation pour surélever le niveau de l’eau afin d’actionner un moulin à foulon et d’assurer ainsi l’irrigation des terrains voisins. Entre les arches, des niches inscrites dans des encadrements rectangulaires soulagent la maçonnerie.
Ce pont se caractérise par sa sobriété et sa robustesse. Il se rapproche des ponts tunisiens de Jédeida et du pont barrage d'el-Battan à Téboulba, édifiés aux XVIIe-XVIIIe siècles. Plusieurs siècles auparavant, des ouvrages de ce type existaient déjà, tels dans la péninsule ibérique l'aqueduc de Valde Puentes qui alimentait en eau la ville de Madinat al-Zahra et le pont de Pinos à Grenade (Xe siècle) et au Portugal à Tavira, le pont édifié sur la rivière Gilâo.
D’al-Andalus, ce type d’ouvrage s'est répandu au Maroc à l'époque almohade, comme l’illustrent les ponts de Sebou (XIIe siècle) et de Tansifet (XIe-XIIe siècles). Cette parenté avec l'Occident musulman n’exclut pas le développement de ponts en Orient. Des ponts monumentaux y furent édifiés à différentes époques, essentiellement sous les Seljuqides d’Anatolie (1077-1307) et les Artuqides (Diyârbakir, 1102-1408), qui portèrent un grand intérêt au développement des voies de communication et furent de grands bâtisseurs d’ouvrages d’art[1].
