بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم "انّما يعمّر مساجد الله من آمن بالله واليوم الآخر وأقام الصلاة وأتى الزكوة ( كذا) / ولم يخش إلاّ الله فعسى أولئك أن يكونوا من المهتدين". وبعد فقد جرا (كذا ) بناء هذه الصومعة/ على يدي الحاج الناسك المقدّس محمّد داي حفظه الله تعالى سنة سبع وخمسين بعد الألف/ كتبه أسير ذنبه محمد/ ابن أحمد الخطيب الحلفاوي
De plan rectangulaire, la mosquée est située à l’ouest de la ville, près de Bâb Mnara et des remparts.
Extérieurement, la façade ouest est rythmée de larges niches aveugles aux arcs à trois voussures en forte saillie, qui ne sont pas sans évoquer la façade de la Grande Mosquée de Sfax (XIe siècle).
Occupant l’angle nord-ouest, le minaret fut ajouté en 1647 par le Dey Mohammed, comme l'atteste une inscription in situ. Ses façades extérieures sont richement décorées et animées de chaque côté par deux arcs géminés outrepassés, à claveaux de couleurs alternées. Le parapet souligné de merlons en dents de scie entoure un lanternon coiffé d’une toiture pyramidale godronnée.
La mosquée est composée d’une salle de prière bordée du côté sud-ouest par une cour renfermant une salle d’ablutions. Cette salle est couverte par une voûte d’arête sur doubleau soulagée par des arcs en plein cintre reposant sur des colonnes, de marbre pour la plupart, surmontées de chapiteaux d’époques diverses, certains romains et byzantins de remploi. Ces organes de support structurent l’espace en sept nefs orientées perpendiculairement au mur de qibla. La nef axiale est plus large que les autres, selon une coutume architecturale ifriqiyenne attestée dès le IXe siècle à la Grande Mosquée de Kairouan probablement héritée de l’architecture omeyyade de Syrie[1].
À la différence de nombre d’édifices ifriqiyens, la travée du mihrâb ne se distingue cependant guère des six autres et aucune coupole ne surmonte le mihrâb.
De dimensions remarquables, ce dernier est composé d’une niche semi-circulaire rythmée de sept niches séparées par des pilastres, surmontées par un cul-de-four mouluré en coquilles, type que l’on retrouve aux mihrâb de la Grande Mosquée de Mahdiyya (Xe siècle) et de Monastir (IXe siècle).
La cour, dont le sol se trouve surhaussé de deux mètres, est bordée de quatre portiques aux arcs en plein cintre outrepassés soulagés par des colonnes de remploi. Le portique sud-est abrite un mihrâb du même genre que celui de la salle de prière.
