Le souk se trouve à proximité de la Grande Mosquée de Tunis. Il constitue avec le souk al-Attarine (« des parfumeurs ») et le souk des Fakia (« des fruits secs »), l'un des souks remarquables de la médina de Tunis.
Relativement vaste, il est constitué d’une allée couverte en voûtes d'arêtes flanquée de deux rangées de boutiques servant de lieu d'exposition et d'atelier pour la fabrication de la chechia[1].
Cette industrie, qui se développa sans doute avec l'arrivée des premiers immigrés andalous, connut une époque florissante aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles. Le dynamisme de l'industrie de la chéchia permit l'enrichissement de ses artisans, qui appartenaient à la bourgeoisie tunisoise. Ils ont élaboré toute une chaîne de production comportant différents centres de lavage, de tricotage, de couture, de teinture et de foulage, éparpillés sur plusieurs centres dans la banlieue de Tunis et le long de la Medjerda.
La qualité de la chechia tunisienne s'imposa partout en Afrique septentrionale (Algérie, Lybie, Égypte) et même au Sud du Sahara (Niger, Tchad, Mali...).
À partir de la fin du XIXe siècle, la concurrence européenne lui fut fatale et elle perdit de son éclat. De nos jours, avec la renaissance des traditions vestimentaires et la présence d'une certaine clientèle touristique, ce souk commence à revivre.
[1] La chéchia est le couvre-chef national de la Tunisie. La chéchia traditionnelle est faite de laine peignée par les femmes qui font les bonnets kabbous. Ces bonnets sont envoyés au foulage : ils sont mouillés avec de l'eau chaude et du savon et les hommes les foulent aux pieds, afin de les détremper, à tel point que les mailles du tricot auront quasiment disparu. Vient alors le traitement du chardon, qui sert au cardage ou peignage du bonnet, afin de transformer le feutre en duveté.
