Inscription en écriture latine : « Luna dies nobe Domini nostri Ihesu Christi millensimo septimo……annorum infidelium. Resurgat in vita eterna cum omnibus sanctis.

Malgré la survivance de l’héritage antique dans le domaine de sa graphie et de possibles influences mozarabes, la recherche décorative caractérisant le dessin des lettres de l’inscription la rapproche plutôt de la calligraphie arabe.

L’épitaphe, rédigée en langue latine, est datée à la fois de l’ère chrétienne et de l’ère islamique.

La stèle est brisée dans sa partie haute : le nom du défunt n’est en conséquence pas lisible. Néanmoins, il est sûr qu’il était chrétien et qu’il a été inhumé le lundi 9 du mois de mars en l’an de grâce 1007, correspondant à l’année 397 de l’Hégire. La fin de l’épitaphe comporte une invocation relative à la résurrection et une évocation du culte des saints.
Le plus remarquable dans cette inscription funéraire est la coexistence des deux usages, chrétien et musulman, pour la datation et surtout l’emploi de la formule « année des infidèles » en référence au calendrier musulman.

Cette épitaphe, ainsi que deux autres découvertes sur le même site, atteste de la présence d’une importante communauté chrétienne à Kairouan, qui exerçait ses rites religieux en toute liberté. Ceci est corroboré par les textes historiques qui témoignent de la présence, en Ifriqiya, de villages à majorité chrétienne et de la survivance de la langue latine pour la pratique liturgique. Aussi, si la présence sur l’épitaphe de la formule annorum infidelium est banale pour désigner les musulmans dans un milieu chrétien, elle ne pouvait sans doute pas l’être dans une capitale islamique et ne peut que traduire l’esprit de tolérance et de respect des minorités qui régnaient à Kairouan au Moyen Âge.

D’autre part, cette stèle présente une parenté avec les stèles mozarabes d’Espagne, dont certaines sont exposées au musée archéologique de Cordoue, ce qui révèle sans doute l’existence de liens entre ces deux communautés chrétiennes.

Datation, formule et graphie la rapprochent de deux autres épitaphes chrétiennes de Kairouan, dont l’une est exposée actuellement au musée de Carthage[1].
