Cette lettre appartient à une série de trente missives[1] envoyées par le sultan tunisien hafside Muhammad II (r. 1295-1309) au roi d’Aragon Jacques II (r. 1291-1327). Elle témoigne bien des relations existant alors entre la Tunisie hafside musulmane (Tunisie et Algérie orientale, 1228-1574) et le royaume chrétien d’Aragon, à une période où le contrôle de la Méditerranée était une composante et une condition essentielle du pouvoir économique et politique. C’est en effet à cette époque que commença à se développer largement la puissance navale catalano-aragonaise, et avec elle sa grande influence sur toute la Méditerranée.
Les thématiques abordées dans cette grande série de lettres sont essentiellement diplomatiques et commerciales.
Ici, Muhammad II tente de susciter une intervention du roi Jacques II d’Aragon avant l’échec de la signature d’un traité de paix entre Tunis et Frédéric de Sicile, frère du souverain chrétien.
Suivant la description de la lettre que fait Alberto Torra, après avoir loué l’amitié de Jacques II et déchargé l’ambassadeur Bernat de Sarria (« il a fait preuve d’une amabilité et d’une attitude raisonnable et d’un comportement si excellents, que nous ne pouvions pas faire moins que de lui attribuer les plus hautes distinctions de notre part et de faire en sorte qu’il se retire satisfait »), il s’insurge contre Frédéric, « car pour toutes les religions il est blâmable que quiconque ayant signé un contrat ne tienne pas ses engagements, et que quiconque ayant commis un acte répréhensible persiste et persévère dans cette action ». Enfin, il demande à Jacques II d’intervenir dans une affaire « dans laquelle Vous êtes l’axe central, qui vous affecte directement et dont Vous êtes à l’origine », faisant échoir le traité ou exigeant la restitution des sommes payées.
L’intensité des relations diplomatiques entre les diverses forces politiques en présence dans le Bassin méditerranéen ne faiblit pas lors des siècles suivants. Au XVIe siècle par exemple, une série de lettres[2] échangées entre le sultan Soliman le Magnifique et le roi français François 1er atteste de la constance des rapports diplomatiques et économiques entre chrétiens et musulmans.
