This letter is one of a series of thirty missives[1] sent by Mohammed II of Tunis, the Hafsid ruler (r.1295-1309) to John II King of Aragon (r.1291-1327). It provides a good picture of relations between the Muslim Hafsid Dynasty (1228-1574, today's Tunisia and eastern Algeria) and the Christian Kingdom of Aragon, at a time when control of the Mediterranean was key to economic and political prowess. The era saw a boom in Catalan and Aragonese naval power and its expansion throughout the Mediterranean.
This long series of letters mainly deals with diplomatic and commercial issues.
Here, Mohammed II tries to get King John II of Aragon to intervene before the collapse of the peace treaty with Frederick of Sicily, brother of the Christian monarch.
According to Alberto Torra, in a letter Mohammed first pays tribute to his friendship with John II, then exonerates ambassador Bernat of Sarria (“he has shown such kindness and reasonableness and has behaved so excellently that we could do no less than award him the highest distinction and see to it that he depart well pleased”), then he proceeds to vituperate against Frederick, “In any religion it is unforgiveable to renegade your word after signing an agreement, or for anyone who commits a reprehensible act to persist with such an act”. He finally asks John II to intervene in an affair “in which you are the central subject, which affects you directly and of which you are the origin”, bringing the Treaty to an end or demanding repayment.
Diplomatic relations between the various political forces in the Mediterranean thrived throughout the following centuries. In the 16th century, for example, a series of letters exchanged between sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and the French king, François I testify to the continuing diplomatic and economic relations between Christians and Muslims.
