According to oriental tradition, it is customary to sit cross-legged on cushions directly on the carpeted floor or on a slightly raised platform. A few elements of furniture such as this Nasrid seat have however survived. This type of folding chair, constructed from light materials, was particularly easy to transport.
The decorative marquetry, which covers every surface, plays on the different colours of the inlayed materials, which form geometric and floral patterns: interwoven lines and circles. The technique of marquetry is derived from the Arab term tarsi or inlay. In Andalusia, this technique appeared in the twelfth century under Almoravid rule but was already known in Egypt in the eighth – ninth century.
The seat and back of the chair are in embossed leather decorated with the Nasrid coat of arms surrounded by floral patterns and birds. This coat of arms was introduced by Muhammad V and can be found on numerous objects such as decorative lustred ceramic tiles, metal objects and cloth.
The delicate and refined style of this artefact and the presence of the Nasrid coat of arms lead researchers to believe that the chair was used during official ceremonies. Towards the end of the fifteenth century, workshops producing this type of seat were certainly to be found in Granada. This style of seat was used in the Christian east and west and dates back to antiquity. These seats borrow their shape from curule chairs, often made of bronze as several archaeological discoveries have found, which according to the many miniature paintings from the Middle and Near East, were reserved for princes and other dignitaries. This type of decoration is still used in present-day Syria and Egypt. Two similar seats from the sixteenth century, manufactured in workshops in Granada, can be seen in the Burgos museum and The National Archaeological Museum. Fifteenth century inventories also mention similar chairs but of less high quality, in the Cathedral of Toledo. These examples probably came from the same sixteenth century workshops. As they were used essentially by royalty and the clergy, they are often to be found in cathedrals and convents.
