- Mention obligatoire, acquisition, don, legs, dépôt : Ce siège a été trouvé par le peintre Gomez Moreno dans un marché d’antiquités, avant de passer dans les collections du Musée de l’Alhambra en 1954.
Dans la tradition orientale, il est d’usage de s’asseoir en tailleur et de recourir à de gros coussins placés sur des tapis au niveau du sol ou légèrement surélevés par une estrade. Néanmoins, on conserve quelques éléments de mobiliers tels que ce siège nasride. Pliable et réalisé dans des matériaux légers, ce siège était facile à transporter.
Son décor marqueté se déploie sur toute sa surface, jouant de la polychromie crée par les différents matériaux incrustés qui forment des motifs géométriques et végétaux : rouelles, entrelacs… La technique de la marqueterie, dérive du terme arabe tarsi (incrustation). Cette technique décorative apparaît Andalousie au XIIe siècle sous la domination almoravide, mais elle était déjà pratiquée en Egypte au VIIIe – IXe siècle.
L’assise et le dossier du siège sont en cuir sur lequel se déploie un décor gaufré fait de blasons nasrides cernés de motifs végétaux et d’oiseaux. Ce blason fut introduit par Muhammad V et est présent sur de nombreux supports, carreaux de revêtement de céramique lustrée, métaux, tissus…
Le raffinement et la délicatesse de cet objet et la présence du blason nasride nous permettent de penser que ce siège était peut-être utilisé lors de cérémonies officielles. Vers la fin du XVe siècle, il existait peut-être à Grenade des ateliers spécialisés dans la fabrication de ce type de fauteuils, dont la forme dérive de l’Antiquité et fut utilisée dans le monde chrétien occidental et oriental. Reprenant la forme de la chaise curule, ces sièges, en bronze bien souvent, dont certains exemplaires ont été trouvés en fouilles, étaient réservés, comme l’indiquent bon nombre de miniatures du Moyen et du Proche-Orient du XIIIe siècle, par les princes ou les dignitaires. Ce type de siège à décor marqueté s’est perpétué jusqu’à nos jours en Syrie et en Egypte. Aujourd’hui, ou peut trouver au Musée de Burgos et au Musée Archéologique National, deux pièces similaires, fabriquées au XVIe siècle, issus des ateliers grenadins. Les inventaires castillans du XVe siècle mentionnent également des sièges similaires mais de moindre qualité, à la Cathédrale de Tolède, certainement issus des mêmes ateliers au XVIe siècle. Utilisés traditionnellement par la royauté et le clergé, ils ont été conservés dans des cathédrales et des couvents.
