Inscriptions of the Mosque and mausoleum of al-‘Ubbād

1-On the monumental porch, inscription in cursive script in Andalusian letters.

2- On the base of the dome, an inscription in Andalusian script (proves that the madrassa was built eight years after the mosque).

3- On the plaster frame of the mausoleum door, an epigraph

1-      الحمد للُه وحده أمر بتشييد هدا الجامع المبارك مولانا السلطان عبد الله علي ابن مولانا السلطان أبي سعيد عثمان ابن مولانا السلطان أبي يوسف يعقوب ابن عبد الحق أيُده اللُه و نصره.عام تسعة و ثلاثين و سبعمائة نفعهم اللُه به.

2-       بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم وصلى الله على سيدنا محمد وعلى آله وسلم تسليما الحمد لله رب العالمين والعاقبة للمتقين أمر ببناء هذا الجامع المبارك والمدرسة المتصلة بغربيه مولانا السلطان العادل أمير المسلمين المجاهد في سبيل الله رب العالمين أبو الحسن بن عبد الحق أيده الله وخلد بالعمل الصالح ذكره وأخلص الله تعالى في عمل البر وجهه.

3-      الحمد لله أمر بتنميق هذه الروضة المباركة المشتملة على ضريح الشيخ سيدي أبي مدين أدركنا الله برضاه الأمير عبد الله السيد محمد باي أيده الله ونصره وجعل الجنة منزله عام ثمانية ومائتين وألف أنظر إلى الدر الأنيق تراه في جيد شريف فتى عشيق نظمه الهاشمي بن صرمشيق.

Translation of inscriptions:

1-      Praise be to Allah Only. Ordered the edification of this blessed mosque our master the sultan, slave of Allah, ‘Alī, son of our master the sultan Abū Sa‘īd ‘Uthmān, son of our master the sultan Abū Yūsuf Ya’qūb ibn ‘Abd al-Haqq. May Allah strengthen and help him! in the year 739. May Allah be favourable to them!

2-      In the name of Allah, the Merciful. May Allah bless our lord and master Muhammad and his family and grant them salvation. Praise be to Allah, lord of the worlds. Future life belongs to those who fear Allah. Ordered the construction of this blessed mosque and madrassa.- Which is adjacent to it to the west, our master and most just sultan, the prince of Muslims, the warrior for faith in the one who struggles on the path of the lord of the worlds. -Abū’l-Hasan son of our master the prince of Muslims, the warrior for faith in the path of the lord of the worlds, Yūsuf ibn ‘Abd al-Haqq, may Allah increase his power and perpetuate his memory by his virtuous deeds. He offered Allah, may he be exalted, pure worship by doing good deeds, with a contented face..

3-  Praise be to Allah! Ordered the embellishment  of this-         blessed garden that includes the tomb of Sheikh Sayyidī Abī Madyan, may Allah procure for us the approval of the prince, servant of Allah – the lord Muhammad Bey, may Allah strengthen and help him and make paradise his home! The year one thousand two hundred and eight – See these lovely beads!- You see them around the noble neck –It is a young man in love who arranged them- Al-Hāshimī ibn Sarmashīq.

Inscription in Arabic: inscription in Kufic script on the capitals of the mihrāb in the prayer hall

Translation of inscriptions: capitals of the mihrāb: “a work ordered by our master, the emir of Muslims, Abū-Ya‘qūb”; left-hand capital: “his ambition is to make it pleasant to the all-powerful god and he hopes that, as a magnificent reward for this work, God will deign to grant him His most effective graces and give him the highest place[1]”.
