Gillermo, arzobispo de Tiro (+1186), escribió una crónica en latín que relata la historia del reino latino de Jerusalén hasta 1184. Una continuación anónima relativa a los acontecimientos de los años 1185-1194 fue escrita en Inglaterra. La obra debe su éxito a su traducción al francés, realizada entre 1220 y 1223, y a las continuaciones que se añadieron también en lengua vernácula hasta 1277. No es de extrañar que la crónica fuera a menudo copiada en el lugar mismo en donde viera la luz, como atestiguan los ejemplares relativamente numerosos producidos en Acre durante el siglo xiii. Génova, Roma, Venecia y sobre todo París contribuyeron a la difusión de esta compilación, fuente fundamental para la historia de Tierra Santa, de las cruzadas y del Oriente latino.
El texto escrito en dos columnas del manuscrito ms. 828 de la biblioteca municipal de Lyon se divide en veintitrés libros introducidos por sendas miniaturas. Exceptuando la del f. 15v (libro ii) que representa a Godofredo de Bouillon, al obispo Adhemar del Puy y a sus tropas cabalgando hacia Tierra Santa, las demás ilustraciones están todas partidas en dos registros más o menos diferenciados. Esta estructura, si bien sirve la narración, no facilita la legibilidad del conjunto. Fallecimiento de reyes, coronación de sus sucesores, asedios y batallas se suceden en episodios animados, que muestran detalles interesantes sobre las técnicas de la guerra como en el f. 33 (libro iv). Las escenas fueron tratadas con un pincel bastante veloz, empleando una paleta de colores vivos sobre un fondo de oro bruñido. Dentro de los libros, cada capítulo empieza por una inicial afiligranada trazada a tinta azul y roja.
Por su estilo e iconografía, las miniaturas se asemejan a las de dos otros ejemplares prácticamente coetáneos que también fueron ejecutados en San Juan de Acre (París, BnF, ms. fr. 2628 y San Petersburgo, BP Saltikov-Schedrín, ms. fr. fol. v.IV.5). La influencia italiana es manifiesta tanto en cierta redondez de la escritura como en el estilo de las pinturas. Ubicada en la costa al sur de Tiro y resguardada por imponentes fortificaciones, Acre se benefició de un rápido auge económico gracias a su actividad portuaria. Sin duda fue la seguridad unida a la prosperidad lo que motivó que los monarcas del reino latino de Jerusalén la escogieran como residencia de predilección en el siglo xii. Sede del Patriarcado de Jerusalén durante la mayor parte del periodo que va de 1191 hasta 1291, Acre fue un centro cosmopolita que fomentó el comercio entre la Europa septentrional, Italia y el Oriente Medio. La actividad de sus scriptoria es un fiel reflejo de este eclecticismo cultural.
