Ce fragment de châle en laine de couleur bleu-noir est barré d’une bande de tapisserie dans laquelle courent deux lignes de pseudo-calligraphie dessinée en miroir. Celle-ci est tissée en lin blanc sur fond bleu-noir et se caractérise par un motif répétitif de hautes hampes terminées par des fleurons. La frise décorative centrale, plus étroite, est composée de registres oblongs rouge ou beige dans lesquels s’insèrent des motifs beiges, rouges, jaunes ou bleus circulaires ou cruciformes. Ce motif est semblable à celui du fragment de toile de lin à bandes décoratives (JFB M 160) de la collection Bouvier[1]. Au registre inférieur, une bande rouge soulignée par un filet rouge borde le châle. Enfin, une bordure frangée composée des fils bleus de la toile de fond termine cette composition.
La pseudo-calligraphie de ce fragment nous renvoie aux tirâz produits dans le Fayoum. Le terme tirâz désigne aussi bien les ateliers d’État ou privés dans lesquels ce type de textile était confectionné que les bandeaux épigraphiés qui y étaient réalisés. Ces bandeaux de tirâz ornaient la plupart du temps le costume d’apparat du calife et portaient fréquemment une formule de bénédiction et pouvaient mentionner le nom du calife. La pseudo-inscription permet de rapprocher ce châle des textiles portant une inscription en coufique fleuronné des tirâz des califes al`Azîz (975-996) et al-Hâkim (996-1021) dans la seconde moitié du XIe siècle. On retrouve sur d’autres étoffes du Fayoum ce type de pseudo-calligraphie comme le montre le fragment de châle JFB I 54 de la collection Bouvier[2].
L’usage des pseudo-caractères était également fréquent sur des bandes en tapisserie coptes destinées à orner des tuniques. Cet emploi est repris sur les châles en laine du Fayoum associant parfois des motifs en lin. Les teintures utilisées comme par exemple pour le rouge rappellent que des liens commerciaux étaient entretenus entre les régions méditerranéennes et l’Inde. À l’époque fatimide, les pays du pourtour méditerranéen ne pouvant plus trouver de teintures dans leurs régions ont dû importer d’Inde ces matières premières rapportant parmi elles le laque d’origine animale que les marchands vénitiens viendront à leur tour chercher en Égypte où ils établissent des comptoirs commerciaux.
Le bandeau central portant des motifs géométriques est l’héritier des motifs coptes. Les traditions coptes ont perduré sur les textiles fatimides comme le montre la bande de tapisserie sur fond de toile qui permet d’inclure un motif décoratif sur le tissu. Le lin utilisé très souvent sur ses étoffes est une matière première dont l’existence en Égypte remonte à l’Antiquité tandis que la laine aurait été apportée par les Grecs.
