Este fragmento de manto de lana de color azul negro está decorado con una franja de tapicería en la que se observan dos líneas de pseudocaligrafía dispuesta en espejo. Esta franja está tejida en lino blanco sobre fondo azul negro y se caracteriza por un motivo repetitivo de trazos alargados que culminan en florones. El friso decorativo central, más estrecho, está compuesto por registros oblongos de color rojo y beis, que encierran formas circulares o cruciformes de color beis, rojo, amarillo y azul. Este motivo se asemeja al del fragmento de tela de lino con franjas decorativas (JFB M160) de la colección Bouvier[1]. En el registro inferior, el manto acaba en una franja roja bordeada de un filete rojo y en una hilera de flecos azules formada por los hilos del tejido de fondo.
La pseudocaligrafía de este fragmento nos remite a los tiraz producidos en El Fayún. El vocablo tiraz designa tanto los talleres estatales o privados en los que se confeccionaba esta clase de tejidos como las franjas epigráficas que allí se realizaban. Estas franjas, la mayoría de las cuales adornaban los trajes de ceremonia del califa, solían llevar bordados su nombre y una bendición. La pseudoinscripción permite asociar este manto a los tejidos con inscripciones cúficas floronadas de los tiraz de los califas al-Aziz (975-996) y al-Hakim (996-1021) de la segunda mitad del siglo xi. En otras telas de El Fayún también se ve este tipo de pseudocaligrafía, como certifica el fragmento de manto JFB I 54 de la colección Bouvier[2].
Así mismo, el uso de esta pseudoescritura era habitual en las franjas de tapicería coptas que adornaban las túnicas, un uso que retoman los mantos de lana de El Fayún, en los que se suelen asociar motivos de lino. Los tintes empleados, por ejemplo para obtener el color rojo, demuestran los contactos comerciales que existían entre las regiones mediterráneas y la India. Durante el período de los fatimíes, los países de la cuenca mediterránea no podían contar con tintes originarios de sus propias regiones y debían importarlos de la India. Entre las materias primas que traían de sus viajes figura además la laca de origen animal que, por su parte, los mercaderes venecianos irían a buscar a Egipto, donde establecieron factorías comerciales.
La franja central con motivos geométricos es heredera de motivos coptos. Las tradiciones coptas perduraron en los tejidos fatimíes, como se puede ver con la franja de tapicería sobre fondo de tejido que permite incluir un motivo decorativo. El lino que se emplea muy a menudo en sus tejidos es una materia prima que existe en Egipto desde la Antigüedad, mientras que la lana probablemente haya sido traída por los griegos.
