Cette aiguière en cuir était utilisée à des fins religieuses. Munie d’un bec verseur et, autrefois, d’une anse, elle facilitait les ablutions qui précèdent la prière. Le goulot obturé par un bouchon, la panse aplatie garnie d’anneaux, indiquent qu’on pouvait la porter en bandoulière et qu’elle faisait également office de gourde de pèlerinage. A la Mecque, les pèlerins avaient coutume de rapporter de l’eau du puits de Zemzem, situé tout à côté de la Kaaba. Ce puits, alimenté par une source que Dieu avait fait apparaître aux yeux d’Agar (l’épouse arabe d’Abraham), contenait une eau qui passait pour guérir et pour répandre toutes sortes de bienfaits.
Brodée sur chaque face, l’ornementation est caractéristique du style décoratif en vogue dans les maisons ottomanes du XVIIIe siècle. Essentiellement végétale, elle se compose de cinq petits bouquets disposés autour d’une grosse pivoine à tige feuillue. Cette pivoine venue de Chine est entrée dans le répertoire islamique au XIVe siècle en empruntant diverses formes, toujours élégantes. Elle prend ici un aspect très sommaire, résultant d’un grand nombre de transcriptions. Ces thèmes chinois, simplifiés par les brodeuses de l’époque ottomane, se répandent au Proche-Orient, dans les Balkans ou dans les pays du Maghreb. On les retrouve, exécutés au point passé plat ou au plumetis, sur les serviettes, les nappes, les coussins, mais aussi sur les caftans, les robes, les gilets. Ce décor sans symbolisme précis, sinon celui qui associe l’eau, les plantes et la vie, pouvait s’appliquer à des objets religieux puisqu’il ne faisait pas appel à des créatures « animées ».
Du côté chrétien, cette transformation d’un objet cultuel en objet d’art, n’est nullement inconnue. Les pèlerins cheminant vers Rome, Jérusalem ou Saint-Jacques de Compostelle se munissaient également de gourdes et de calebasses. Les pèlerins de Saint-Jacques les portaient à la ceinture ou accrochées en haut d’un bâton. Au XVIe siècle, la France et l’Italie les reproduisirent en verre émaillé et doré et en firent des objets de grand luxe, ornés de blasons, de figures et de portraits, où la référence religieuse se fait alors très vague.
