Ce tableau, réalisé en Espagne au cours du second quart du XVe siècle, nous donne à voir le dernier repas de Jésus-Christ.
La Cène (terme issu du latin cena : repas du soir) est le nom donné par les chrétiens au dernier repas que Jésus-Christ partagea avec les douze apôtres le soir du Jeudi saint, peu de temps avant son arrestation, la veille de sa crucifixion (appelée encore Passion par les chrétiens), et trois jours avant sa résurrection.
La représentation de cette scène a d’abord une fonction pédagogique avant de devenir un thème iconographique majeur au XVe siècle. Le dernier repas du Christ auquel est lié l’Eucharistie (c’est au cours de ce repas que Jésus prononce « Ceci est mon corps, ceci est mon sang ») est un élément majeur du christianisme.
Dans ce tableau réalisé dans l’Espagne catholique du XVe siècle, le dernier repas du Christ est représenté comme un banquet princier, tel qu’il pourrait être dressé dans une riche demeure valencienne à la fin du Moyen Âge. La table est ornée de céramiques à décor lustré et bleu cobalt, qui mêlent influences musulmanes et chrétiennes, comme sur la coupe du deuxième buveur à la gauche de Jésus, sur l’assiette devant Jésus, ou encore sur le bol en face du premier personnage à la droite de Jésus.
Ce tableau illustre les liens étroits établis entre Orient et Occident dans l’expression de l’art de vie et du raffinement.
La céramique à reflets métalliques venue d’Orient, importée en Espagne musulmane devient un élément luxueux de la vie quotidienne et raffinée des princes. Les princes chrétiens d’Espagne, en contacts étroits avec la civilisation musulmane, ne pouvaient manquer d’être séduits par cette céramique luxueuse aux reflets changeants.
Les artistes musulmans sont ainsi encouragés à venir s’installer dans la région de Valence, et dès le XIVe siècle une production se met en place. Pour cette raison, ces céramiques sont souvent dites « hispano-mauresques ».
Ces céramiques suscitent un engouement sans précédent et sont exportées dans toutes les cours européennes, comme celle des Médicis à Florence ou encore le Palais des Papes en Avignon. Objets de prestiges recherchés par les plus grands, ils sont identifiables sur différentes peintures illustrant les sujets les plus pieux comme c’est le cas ici ou encore sur le tableau de la Pietà de Villeneuve-lès-Avignon de Enguerrand.
