Ce pot à pharmacie (albarello) a été fabriqué à Málaga à la fin du XVe siècle, peut-être vers 1480, peu de temps avant que cette ville du royaume nasride ne tombe aux mains des chrétiens.
Cet albarelle servait à la conservation des drogues et des produits médicinaux. L'Espagne joue un grand rôle dans la transmission à l'Occident latin du savoir médical accumulé par les Arabes. Au XIVe siècle à Malaga puis à Valence et ailleurs on imite les vase importés avec les drogues.
La forme, venue de l'Orient musulman, reste traditionnelle : corps cyclindrique un peu concave, permettant une bonne préhension de l'objet ; haut col destiné à recevoir un couvercle en parchemin fixé par une cordelette. La décoration en sept registres recourt à des thèmes abstraits : bandes verticales, larges virgules jetées comme des entrelacs. Tout cela fait référence au répertoire musulman classique, désormais très simplifié.
Le décor à reflets métalliques et bleu cobalt est lui-même hérité d'un procédé mis au point en Irak abbasside au IXe siècle et qui s'est propagé au fil des siècles sur le pourtour de la Méditerranée. Les céramistes de Málaga qui ont transmis aux ateliers de Valence et de Manisès le secret du décor lustré ; de là, il gagnera le reste de la péninsule ibérique, puis l'Italie vers 1500.
A travers ces objets de grand commerce se devinent la circulation des procédés artisanaux et un peu de l'histoire de la pharmacopée et de la médecine médiévales dans l'espace méditerranéen.
