This pharmacy jar (albarello) was produced in Málaga during the late fifteenth century, perhaps around 1480 – shortly before the city, part of the Nasrid kingdom, fell into the hands of the Christians.
The form, which came from the Muslim East, is traditional: a slightly concave, cylindrical body, allowing the object to be easily held, and a high neck that could be covered with a piece of parchment tied round it with a cord. The decoration in seven registers features abstract themes: vertical stripes and wide commas arranged like interlacing. All these elements refer to the Muslim classical repertory, henceforth very simplified.
The metallic lustre and cobalt blue decoration itself is inherited from a process developed in Abbasid Iraq during the ninth century and that spread throughout the Mediterranean region over the centuries. The secret of the lustre decoration of Málaga ceramics was passed on to the workshops of Valencia and Manises; from there, it spread to the rest of the Iberian Peninsula, and then to Italy around 1500.
These widely traded objects shed light on the flow of handicraft processes and a little on the history of the medieval pharmacopeia and medicine in the Mediterranean region.
