Classé monument historique en 1916, restauré entre 1996 et 1998 sous les auspices de la Fondation Muhammad Karim Lamrani qui l'a transformé en Musée des arts et métiers du bois.
Ce funduq est situé au cœur de la médina de Fès et relié, par les deux principales artères de la ville (Tal'a Sghira et Tal'a Kbira), à la porte ouest de celle-ci (Bâb Bûjlûd). Il occupe l’une des façades de la place Najjârîn abritant les menuisiers (Najjârîn) probablement depuis l'époque marinide. Ces proportions et ses spécificités architecturales en font l'un des plus imposants caravansérails de la ville. Il fut fondé en 1711 pour entreposer les marchandises précieuses des gens de pouvoir et des grands négociants, fonction qui prit fin vers 1940, lorsque les autorités du Protectorat français le convertirent en commissariat de police.
Le funduq al-Najjârîn épouse un plan rectangulaire d'orientation nord-est/sud-ouest. Le monument se distingue des autres caravansérails de la ville par sa porte monumentale, ouverte par un arc brisé outrepassé encadré par un second arc polylobé en plâtre sculpté. Les écoinçons de ce dernier sont revêtus de carreaux de céramique à décor floral. Au dessus, un imposant auvent en bois sculpté couronne une succession d'arcades en plâtre ciselé. Elle donne accès à un vestibule droit qui aboutit à une cour rectangulaire. Le bâtiment est composé de trois niveaux dont les façades sont symétriques, accueillant cinquante et une pièces de formes inégales.
On ne peut parler du funduq al-Najjârîn sans évoquer la fontaine qui garnit la façade du monument depuis la première moitié du XIXe siècle. Elle s'inscrit en parfaite harmonie avec la porte du funduq, reprenant sa structure élancée et sa décoration reposant successivement sur la céramique et le plâtre sculpté et l'auvent en bois de cèdre sculpté et peint, surmonté de tuiles vertes. La façade de la fontaine met en valeur un arc en plein cintre outrepassé encadré par un arc en lambrequins. De part et d'autre de cette ouverture aveugle se positionnent deux piliers reposant sur un bassin de forme rectangulaire et supportant un linteau portant une inscription à caractères cursifs. C'est sur ce linteau que reposent les consoles en bois qui soutiennent l'auvent du monument.
