It was classified as a historic monument in 1916, and restored between 1996 and 1998 under the auspices of the Muhammad Karim Lamrani Foundation, which turned it into a museum for the art and craft of woodworking
The Funduq is located at the heart of the Fez medina and linked by the city’s two main streets (Tal'a Sghira and Tal'a Kbira), to the western door of the latter (Bāb Būjlūd). It takes up one of the facades of the Najjārīn square that has probably accommodated carpenters (Najjārīn) since the Marinid era. Its proportions and architectural specifications make it one of the city’s most imposing caravanserais. It was founded in 1711 as a storage facility for the precious merchandise of influential people and important traders, but this function ended in 1940, when the authorities of the French Protectorate converted it into a police station.
The al-Najjārīn Funduq has a rectangular, north-east/south-west plan. With its monumental door, opened by a pointed horseshoe arch framed by a second, polylobed arch in carved plaster, the building stands out from the other city caravanserai. The spandrel of the latter are covered in ceramic tiles with a floral decoration. Above, an imposing, carved wood canopy crowns a series of carved plaster arches. It opens out onto a straight hall that leads to a rectangular courtyard. The building has three storeys with symmetrical facades, housing fifty-one irregularly shaped rooms.
One of the al-Najjārīn Funduq’s most important features is the fountain that has ornamented the monument’s facade since the first half of the nineteenth century. It is in perfect harmony with the Funduq’s door, with its slender structure, ceramic and carved plaster decorations, and canopy in carved and painted cedarwood, topped with green tiles. The facade of the fountain highlights a round horseshoe arch framed by a lambrequin arch. Two pillars flank this blind opening, and sit on a rectangular basin, supporting a lintel bearing an inscription in cursive letters. The wooden brackets that support the monument’s canopy rest on this lintel.
