Dès l'époque almohade (1130-1269), l'art de la reliure connaît au Maroc un essor considérable, à tel point que la technique prend le nom du pays : la maroquinerie. Un ouvrage intitulé Al-Taysir fî sina‘ati al-Tasfîr (L’art de la reliure), rédigé au nom du calife almohade Ya‘qûb al-Mansûr, met en exergue les types de reliures exécutées à l’époque et les méthodes de leur mise en œuvre. À ce propos, Ibn Tufayl[1] décrit la cérémonie officielle de la reliure d’un coran importée de Cordoue à Marrakech par le roi almohade ‘Abd al-Mu’min ibn ‘Alî.
Cette reliure protège un unique volume de coran almohade rédigé en écriture andalouse sur parchemin. La reliure se compose de deux plats carrés, reliés entre eux par le dos et le rabat à tranches rectangulaires. Le dos présente un décor doré réalisé aux petits fers : une frise de médaillons perlés enserrant un motif de vase jaillissant couronné d’un fleuron. Les deux plats portent un décor géométrique fait de quatre carrés décroissants délimitant des bordures qui enserrent des frises aux motifs géométriques ponctués de végétaux. Au centre se développe une magnifique composition géométrique issue d’une étoile à huit pointes, formant des polygones (hexagones, pentagones pointés, trois quarts d'étoiles) au cœur de fleurons, palmettes bifides ou de roses, estampés aux petits fers. Le contraste entre l’or et le brun du cuir crée un jeu d’ombre et de lumière amplifié par le rythme donné par les vides et les pleins du décor.
La présence de cette trame décorative, attestée dans beaucoup d’aspects de la culture matérielle almohade et post-almohade, se perpétue dans l’espace géographique méditerranéen en art et en architecture, à Séville et Marrakech sous les Almohades, à Fès sous les Marinides (1196-1549), à Grenade sous les Nasride (1230-1492). Elle se retrouve également sur les plafonds en bois et les panneaux en mosaïque de céramique de l’architecture palatiale alaouite des différentes cités impériales du Maroc, et en Orient, particulièrement en Égypte mamluke, dans le travail du bois.
Une décoration similaire est attestée sur la page de garde d’un manuscrit de la Bibliothèque royale de Rabat (n°11978), et sur la couverture d’un autre (n°7760) traitant des sciences coraniques (‘ilm al-qira’at). Le style almohade des reliures est nettement différent du style oriental. Il recourt à un procédé de gaufrage aux petits fers qui était encore pratiqué par les relieurs marocains du XXe siècle.
