Ce coffret nasride rectangulaire, qui servait probablement d’écritoire, est formé de plusieurs planches de bois réunies par des ferrures, dont deux larges charnières rattachant le couvercle avec la partie postérieure du coffret, et huit autres aux angles. Sur la face est appliquée, par des clous, une serrure de forme lancéolée. Deux anses semi-circulaires festonnées sont fixées sur les parties latérales, une autre, rectangulaire à crochets, sur le couvercle.
La totalité de la surface extérieure de l’objet, à l’exception de la base, est plaquée d’un décor de très fine marqueterie ; organisé en panneaux encadrés de plusieurs bordures il utilise des motifs géométriques bien connus de l’art islamique – polygones octogonaux enfermant des rosaces étoilées, carrés meublés de damiers posés sur la pointe, galons – et d’autres inspirés de l’architecture : merlons à degrés (de format plus important aux angles du coffret). Cette technique décorative, déjà connue en Égypte tulunide, connut un grand succès en Andalousie, avec la construction au XIIe siècle du minbar almoravide de la mosquée Kutubiyya de Marrakech, fabriqué dans les ateliers cordouans. La marqueterie fut employée sans interruption au cours de la période nasride (XIIIe-XVe siècles) dans les productions du Royaume de Grenade, pour la fabrication de coffrets, d’échiquiers, de portes de meubles… Les couleurs, blanc, vert et vert foncé, sont soulignées de rouge. Ce type de décor se rencontre aussi dans les revêtements muraux en céramique glacée (Maroc) et même dans les textiles[1].
Le revers du couvercle est tapissé d’un réseau de croix et d’étoiles imbriquées. L’intérieur du coffret contient plusieurs compartiments, peut-être destinés à ranger divers instruments d’écriture. Une organisation un peu semblable se retrouve à l’intérieur d’un coffret de voyage tolédan, de la seconde moitié du XIVe siècle[2].
On connaît d’autres coffrets similaires à celui-ci, conservés au Musée des Arts décoratifs de Madrid, au Musée de l’Alhambra et dans la Cathédrale de Jaén, bien que ceux-ci soient plus récents. Ce type de coffret serait l’ancêtre des fameux secrétaires espagnols. Des coffrets très similaires existent aussi en Égypte mamluke.
