Église Sainte-Catherine

Située au bord de la mer, entre Tripoli et Batroun, Enfé était la baronnie de Nefin appartenant aux Rénouard, une famille provençale venue en Terre Sainte aux côtés de Raymond de Saint Gilles lors de la première croisade. Elle possédait un château imposant à vingt tours dont les remparts existaient encore au XIXe siècle, selon Ernest Renan. L’église Sainte-Catherine est une des deux églises survivantes de cette époque. P. Coupel y a trouvé les restes d’un écusson de l’Ordre des Hospitaliers, dont le patronage et la juridiction se seraient exercés sur cet édifice jusqu’en 1198.
Orientée vers l’est et faisant face à la mer, l’église est construite en pierre calcaire selon un plan rectangulaire. Sa nef unique se termine par une grande abside munie d’une fenêtre. Trois portails à doubles voussoirs sur des impostes s’ouvrent au nord, au sud et à l’ouest, où la façade est percée d’un oculus à large bandeau placé entre deux fenêtres à double encadrement mouluré. Le clocher est une addition récente.
D’après Enlart, la disposition de la façade et l’ordonnance intérieure imiterait celle de l’abbaye de Belmont (Balamand). Le dispositif d’éclairage de l’église – l’oculus et les deux fenêtres – est fréquent dans les églises romanes en Occident, mais on le retrouve dans plusieurs exemples en Orient comme au Crac des Chevalier, à l’église Saint-Porphyre de Gaza ou à la cathédrale de Tartus (la Tortose des Croisés). Les oculi, déjà présents dans l’architecture omeyyade des palais, comme à Khirbat al-Mafjar, deviennent populaires dans l’architecture mamluke, reflétant une influence de l’architecture des Croisés.
