Ce pichet monté sur piédouche a une panse renflée et une anse courbée. Son col est surmonté d’une ouverture concave assez évasée et décorée d’une inscription en graphie cursive en partie illisible (on déchiffre le mot al-‘âlim : le savant). Deux autres bandes d’inscriptions gravées sur l’épaule et sur la panse, répètent les mêmes souhaits de gloire au destinataire, selon une formule courante à l’époque mamluke. Le destinataire n’est pas nommé mais sa titulature pourrait indiquer un personnage d’importance. Le décor de la panse se termine par des poissons alternant avec un motif végétal à cinq feuilles.
Ce pichet était destiné à recevoir de l’eau, l’absence de glaçure permettant l’évaporation d’une partie du liquide et le refroidissement du reste. La graphie cursive, peu élégante, dessine de larges courbes ondulantes et des hampes épaisses qui laissent deviner une certaine hâte à décorer l’objet. Il constitue un exemple d’une production à grande échelle d’objets utilitaires qui prend son essor dans la région du Levant aux époques ayyubide et mamluke, mais puise ses sources dans l’Antiquité. La céramique non glaçurée est le matériel le plus présent sur les sites de fouilles archéologiques, depuis le Maghreb jusqu’à l’Iran. De nombreuses variantes existent dans les formes et les décors, comme le montre un vase marocain du XIIIe siècle[1].
