Gloria a nuestro señor el soberano, el justo, el sabio, el victorioso.
Esta jarra montada sobre pedestal tiene una panza hinchada y un asa curvada. Su cuello se termina con una apertura cóncava bastante ancha y está decorado de una inscripción en grafía cursiva, en parte ilegible (se descifra la palabra al-‘âlim: el sabio). Otras dos bandas de inscripciones grabadas en el hombro y en la panza, repiten los mismos deseos de gloria al destinatario, según una fórmula corriente en la época mameluca. El destinatario no se nombra, pero su título podría indicar un personaje de importancia. La decoración de la panza se termina con peces que alternan con un motivo vegetal de cinco hojas.
Esta jarra estaba destinada a recibir agua y la ausencia de vidriado permitía la evaporación de una parte del líquido y el enfriamiento del resto. La grafía cursiva, poco elegante, dibuja anchas curvas ondulantes y espesos trazos verticales, que dejan adivinar una cierta prisa por decorar el objeto. Constituye un ejemplo de una producción a gran escala de objetos utilitarios, que encuentra su auge en la región del levante en las épocas ayyubí y mameluca, pero que toma sus fuentes de la antigüedad. La cerámica no vidriada es el material más presente en los sitios de excavaciones arqueológicas, desde el Magreb hasta Irán. Existen numerosas variantes en las formas y las decoraciones, como lo muestra un jarrón marroquí del siglo XIII[1].
