This bracelet comes from the Beqaa region. It was found without archaeological context and it is part of a group of gold jewellery acquired by the National Museum in Beirut. Its two hollow sections, made of cabled, perforated and embossed gold leaf, are joined by a hinge. The pin clasp is adorned with a ruby surrounded by four filigreed convexities. This type of hollow-opening bracelet is well attested. It was already being used during the Roman era and also existed in the Iranian world. Several bracelets similar to this one are in various collections, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art[1] in New York, the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington[2], the Los Angeles County Museum of Art[3], the Louvre Museum in Paris, and the National Museum of Damascus[4], to name the most well-known. These examples are for the most part attributed to Syria, with a few of them to Iran[5]. It is obvious that the goldsmithing techniques in Syria and Egypt, which are very old, were also influenced by those of the Iranian world.
Dating jewellery is not always easy because goldsmithing is often characterized by the continuity and preservation of certain traditions. Those of the Fatimid period demonstrate the know-how developed by the jewellers as well as the taste of the clientele of the period. Essential elements of female adornment, gold jewellery was part of the "dowry" offered by the fiancé to his betrothed. It also had reliable economic value, especially in times of crisis. Most of the jewellery produced during the medieval period has thus disappeared, as it was melted down.
